Mosquito Season Begins

The Adams County Mosquito Control District will begin checking early spots of standing water for mosquito larva starting Thursday, March 21. There are several small areas throughout Adams County that have produced mosquito larva in the early spring for years.

Products used are: Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, Bacillus sphaericus and Methoprene for larva control and Monomolecular Surface Film and refined petroleum distillates for pupa control. These products have been used for years. There are no restrictions for the larva control products or the surface film around humans or cattle.

As the weather warms up the coverage area increases. Also when the weather warms, there may be some flying insects that look a lot like a mosquito, they are called midges. They will usually swarm in bunches or columns, but they do not bite. Every year a few adult mosquitoes survive the winter and they will usually disappear in a day or two. Spraying for adult mosquitoes will begin later this year when needed.
