Niezwaag wins district title, seven advance to regionals

The LRS wrestling team came home from the Sub Regional Wrestling Tournament Saturday with one champion and one runner-up.

Keanu Niezwaag captured first place in the 145-pound class. Cory Goble finished second at 220 pounds.

As a team, the Broncos will advance seven competitors and one alternate to the Regional Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday in Reardan.

The team took 11 wrestlers to sub regionals, also known as districts.

Matthias Ferderer and Kyle Ritz both wrestled at 106 pounds.

Ferderer first wrestled Austin Stauffer of Davenport but lost by pin.

Ritz wrestled Isaac Bob of White Swan and ended up losing by pin.

The pair then wrestled each other for third and fourth with Ritz winning by pin. Both advance to regionals.

Ethan Melville and Karl Hawks wrestled at 160.

“This was the toughest weight class of the tournament,” head coach Jason Hilzer said.

Melville wrestled Kyle Hyer of Pomeroy and controlled the match throughout. In the third period, leading 6-3, Melville was taken down and put on his back and ended up losing 7-6.

He then wrestled Dalton Janopolus of Waitsburg/Prescott and lost by a score of 9-0.

Hawks wrestled Kevin Knaff of Gar-Pal and lost by pin. Both wrestlers were then out of the tournament.

Nick Kuest, 152, wrestled Will Copeland of Wilbur-Creston/Keller and won by a score of 6-4. He then wrestled Charlie Eldred of Reardan and lost by pin. He wrestled Jesse Rawson of W/P and lost by a score of 9-2.

Kuest then met Blaine Reisdorph of Pomeroy and lost by pin to finish in eighth place. The top six wrestlers in each weight class advance to the next round.

Pedro Huitron, 145, wrestled Connor Nikkola of Reardan and won by pin. Huitron then wrestled his teammate, Niezwaag and lost by pin. In the third round he met Alvaro Gonzalez of White Swan and lost by pin. In his final match, Huitron went against Trent Kitselman of W/P and won by pin to finish in seventh place to advance as an alternate at regionals.

Layne Hawks and Matt Vercoe both wrestled at 285 pounds.

Layne wrestled Tristan Newman of W/P and lost by pin. He then wrestled Jose Suarez of White Swan and won by pin. He lost his third match when he wrestled Damon Dixon of WCK.

This put Layne against Vercoe for third and fourth with Layne winning by pin. Both advance to regionals.

Alexis Guizar, 220 wrestled Giovano Rojas of White Swan and lost by pin. He then went against Juan Salazar of W/P and won by pin.

Guizar took on Danny Brockman of Reardan in the third round and lost by pin. Alexis then wrestled Eric Sackett of Davenport and lost by pin to finish in sixth place. He also advances to regionals.

Goble wrestled Kevin Winder of Liberty and won by pin. He then wrestled Giovanni Rojas of White Swan and won by pin. This put Goble in the finals against top seeded Austin Reisdorph of Pomeroy and he ended up losing by pin to finish in second place.

Niezwaag wrestled Huitron and won by pin. He then went against Wyatt Hyer of Pomeroy and won by a score of 7-1. This put him in the finals against Adam Herres of Pomeroy and Niezwaag won by pin to earn the title of district champion.

The Regional Tournament begins at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8 and then continues at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9.
