Student scholarship available for community involvement

The deadline for the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) Center for Quality Communities scholarship is March 15. Applications for the scholarship can be picked up at Ritzville City Hall during regular business hours.

The AWC Center for Quality Communities scholarship awards six $1,000 scholarships for high school seniors who are actively involved in their community and want to pursue post-secondary education. The Ritzville City Council decided to support this scholarship and allow students the opportunity to apply.

Students who are eligible for this scholarship must meet the following requirements. The student must be involved with a city government or community/school leadership activity. They must qualify to graduate from high school, complete home school or receive a GED in spring/summer 2013. Students must be a Washington state resident, and plan to continue their education during the 2013-2014 school year.

Scholarship funds are sent directly to the institution and deposited into the students’ account. The scholarship may only be used for education expenses.

The Center believes in educating student leaders who care about their communities. Their goal is to help citizens understand the important role their cities and towns play in Washington.

There are 281 Washington cities and towns being recruited for the Center for Quality Communities Scholarship. Each participating city may pick one applicant as their nominee for the scholarship. Ritzville City Council has decided to be one of the towns that will participate.

The Ritzville City Council Committee sends the final application of their nominee to the AWC Center for Quality Communities Scholarship by March 15. The scholarship winners should be contacted by May.
