LRS athletes succeed at Inland Empire Tournament

The LRS tennis team sent a large group of athletes to the 67th annual Inland Empire Tournament in Spokane on April 27-28. The Broncos earned more wins in this tournament than any other LRS team previously had. The Inland Empire Tournament brings in athletes from all over the state of Washington and also some Oregon schools.

The biggest teams competing at the tournament included Spokane, Yakima, Tri-Cities, Coeur d’Alene and Portland.

The wins at the event for the LRS team included No. 1 boy’s singles, Zach Swanger having a win over Kennewick and then lost to Gonzaga Preparatory School. No. 1 girl’s singles Tracy Melville had a win over Southridge and then lost to Connell in three sets.

No. 1 girl’s doubles Kelly Melville and Chelsey Heidenreich lost to Mead in three sets, beat Medical Lake in three sets, and then lost to Richland in another close match. No. 2 girl’s doubles Alanna Wheeler and Nozomi Miyamoto lost to Mt. Spokane then beat Medical Lake, North Central, East Valley and Lake City. Wheeler and Miyamoto were the consolation champions at the event.

No. 3 girl’s doubles Rachel Barrus and Dezarae West beat North Central and then lost to Ellensburg.

The LRS athletes who participated in the event were Zeth Swanger, Alex Wheeler, David Ruse, Emily Buriak, Justin Templin, Lindy Brown and Stephen Ulrich.

The LRS tennis team travels to Davenport to compete in the Second’s Tournament on Saturday, May 5 beginning at 9 a.m.
