League Champions: To play in district title game May 15

With three wins in the last four games of the regular season, the LRS Broncos finished 17-2 overall in regular season play and earned themselves the league championship.

The Broncos technically finished tied with Northwest Christian as both teams had 14-2 league records. But, the Broncos held the tiebreaker, having defeated the Crusaders twice this season.

The regular season success sets up the Broncos for a District championship game with NWC on Tuesday, May 15, at 1 p.m. at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane.

The Broncos have been to the state baseball tournament eight of the past nine years, only missing the trip in 2009. They were league champions last in 2007, when they also won the district title.

“It’s good,” head coach Jason Aldrich said of the season. “The kids wanted to finish 18-1, but 17-2 is not bad. But, being league champs is even better.”

The Broncos finished the season Tuesday, splitting a doubleheader with Liberty. They won 13-3 and lost 12-5.

Last Saturday, they traveled to Davenport, where they defeated the Gorillas twice, 7-0 and 14-3.

Aldrich knows that Northwest Christian is going to be looking for some payback during the district title game.

“They are gunning for us. They want another crack at us,” he said.

Win or lose, the Broncos advance to the regional tournament, which is technically the start of the state baseball tournament.

If they win, they play at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, in Spokane. If they lose, they play on the same day at 10 a.m. in Walla Walla.

From there, if they advance they will be one of the final four playing for the state title in Ellensburg.
