And the winner is... results from the fair

Here is a list of this year’s winners and champions in various departments as provided to the newspaper by the Wheat Land Communities’ Fair.

Photography

Superintendent was Dawn Wolf. Total number of entries for this department was 177; which included 48 open youth and 129 adult.

Best of Class Awards went to Haley Oestreich for “Piano,” Kate Schell for “The Fence,” Stephen McFadden for “Teasel” and “Balancing Act.” Michelle Hennings for “Cheese” and Ryan Stemkoski earned Best of Class and Best of Show for “Antique Gas Pump.”

Special Merit Awards went to: Haley Oestreich for “12 gauge,” Kiersten Witt for “Lawn Flower,” Leslie Greenwalt for “Gone Fishing,” Vanessa Keeley for “Hitching a ride,” Luke McRae for “Rollins Gate,” Stephen McFadden for “Praying Mantis,” Nicole Bailes for “Clowning Around,” Debbie Arlt for “Rainbow in my Backyard” and “Sunset Windmill,” Ryan Stemkoski for “Potato Field” and “Excitement,” Randy Roth for “Me n My Shadow” and Marisa Russel for “The Dam.”

Fruits & Vegetables

Trish McRae served as superintendent and handled 164 entries, of which 75 were open youth and 89 were adult.

Heidi Nygren earned a Special Merit for her watermelon. Rod Larse received a Special Merit for tennis ball lettuce. Heidi Hennings earned Special Merit for her odd shaped tomato.

Best of Class awards went to Livia Kent for “Cornelius” creature feature, Candace Lee for Japanese radish and Jonathan Stromberger for having the largest zucchini squash.

Best of Show award went to Rod Larse for pale gypsy sweet pepper.

Plants & Flowers

Karyn Allen and Joyce Preston shared the superintendent duties for this department. There were 24 open youth entries and 69 adult for a total of 93 entries.

Special Merit Awards went to: Garrett Frederick for a Hypetifa pot, Emmi Von Olnhausen for floribunda rose, Vern Wagner for light green gladiolus, Garrett Frederick for orange and red gladiolus, Vanessa Keeley for pink gladiolus and Joan Kison for Lady Bust.

Best of Class award was received by Garrett Frederick with an animal zoo entry, earning him a $15 gift certificate from Java Bloom. Joan Kison received Best of Class award with a harvest jubilee arrangement, earning a $15 gift certificate from Java Bloom. Bessie Allen won Best of Class and a decorative pot from Erica Hennings for her house plant. Garrett Frederick won Best of Class for his sedum, also earning a $5 gift certificate from Washtucna Progressive Club. A $10 gift certificate from Washtucna Progressive Club went to Vern Wagner for earning the Best of Class on red gladiolus. Ryan Frederick took home Best of Show for an Amaryllis also earning a $20 gift certificate from Sunny Spot Floral and Gifts.

Canned Food

Lori Williams served as superintendent with 176 entries, of which 44 were open youth and 132 were adult.

Youth Best of Show went to Tom Hein for peach jam and Adult Best of Show went to Ellen Hein for raspberry jam.

Best of Class awards went to Dale and Cindy Warriner for grape juice, Alice Weber for her apricot/pineapple/blackberry jam, Janette Hollenback for dried sage, Kathy Brown for whole cherries and Kendrain Witt for dill pickles.

Special Merit awards were earned by: Janette Hollenback for dried tomatoes, Pam Maier for beans, Elizabeth Rich for Bing cherries and Ruth Rich for Bing cherries.

Baking

Kim Schofstoll handled superintendent duties for the baking department, which had 62 open youth entries and 35 adult entries for a total of 97 entries.

The Washington Association of Wheat Growers (WAWG) sponsored Best of Show ribbons for Diane Eastman, Adult Best of Show for Whole Wheat Bread and to Abby Gering, Youth Best of Show for Whole Wheat Bread.

The Adams County Wheat Growers sponsored the open youth Baking Award that went to Abby Gering for her Special Merit Apricot Bars. Another Special Merit award went to Katie Manke for strudel topped peach bars.

Machine Stitching

Jan Collard was the superintendent in charge of three FFA entries, 17 open youth, and 41 adult entries.

Youth Awards went to Tessa Jantz, Best of Class on a bag, Special Merit for a dog coat and Special Merit for a bag. Melanie Spivey earned Special Merit for a pillowcase.

Adult winners included Marge Schoessler, Best of Class on table runner; Sandy Atkinson, Special Merit for table runner; Yvonne Anderson, Special Merit for a table runner and a holiday piece; Stephanie Geschke, Special Merit on a bag. Adult Best of Show went to a bag made by Donna Koch.

Clothing

Jan Collard was also in charge of this department with 23 items; one FFA, seven open youth and 15 adult.

Youth Best of Class went to a sundress by Shelby Kriegh. Adult Best of Class went to an unlined jacket by Yvonne Anderson. Best of Show went to a coat by Linda Kubik and a Special Merit went to Donna Koch.

Handiwork

Barb Maruska was in charge of 38 items: three open youth and 35 adult.

Donna Koch earned Best of Class for a Christmas sock; Jeanne Schrag earned Special Merit for an afghan; Bernice Kanzler received Best of Show for a lace-crocheted cardigan; Rosemary Elkington received Best of Class for picture titled “Auction Day;” Kathy Coley received Special Merit for picture titled “Alpine Seasons.”

Quilts

Beverly Cobb took care of the 82 entries for the quilt department, including three youth entries.

In the youth division, Mickayla Hall’s log cabin table runner earned Best of Show while Katheran Gingrich’s Dora’s quilt received Special Merit.

The Best of Show Quilt was earned by Kim Lantis for her “No Guilt Quilt.”

Washington State Quilters Awards went to Yvonne Anderson, first, Texas star; JoRene Zumdahl, second, winter; Stephanie Geschke,third, let it snow.

Best of Class winners were: Rose Shearer, green puzzle; PJ Jacobsen, two hearts; Rose Shearer, sun bonnet sue; Yvonne Anderson, Texas Star; Donna Koch, zippy stripy; Janice Iltz, lap rag quilt; Marge Schoessler, brown and pink tumbler; Stephanie Geschke, vest; Donna Koch, charm school.

Field Crops

Gayle and Gaynel Gering were in charge of this department, handling 86 entries including five FFA, 31 open youth and 50 adult.

Special Merit winners for field run wheat included Travis Simonson and Carol Simonson from Adult Division. Adam Manke and Garrett Frederick from Youth division, and Caitlin Schoessler and Bryson Gering from FFA division.

Pam Maier earned Best of Show for wheat weaving, which was sponsored by Ritzville Warehouse Company.

Jar and Loaf winners were Abby Gering earning first place and Tessa Jantz earning second; these winners were sponsored by Wheat Land Communities’ Fair.

Jar and Loaf winners that were sponsored by the Ritzville Warehouse Company included Pam Maier, first place; Lori Williams, second place; and Donna Koch, third place.

Adult Arts and Crafts

John Rankin took charge of this department with 24 entries.

Best of Show went to Dale Warriner for a taxidermy mounted walleye.

Special Merit was earned by Jenni Wyma for a stained glass picture.

Woodworking

Superintendent Dwight Olson was in charge of 39 entries – 22 FFA, 11 open youth and five adult.

Jim Allen took home Best of Show for his wood chest.

Spinning, Weaving and Wool

Janice Dennis and Marie Gettmann had 44 entries in this department – three open youth and 41 adult.

Best of Class was awarded to Katie Chisley for handspun, hand-woven scarf.

Taryn Winegardner earned Special Merit for handspun yarn art and Best of Class for hand painted two-ply wool.

Leslie Haner earned Best of Class and Best of Show for handspun hand knit shawl.

Dorothy Mucha was awarded Best of Class for hand woven dish towel.

Antique Machinery

Superintendent Morgane Roth had one entry by Jim Tate, earning him Best of Show for antique tractor.

Model Kits

Paul McAnally took care of 30 entries in this department.

Tom Hein earned Best of Show for the Lego fair and rodeo. Benjamin Clinesmith earned Best of Class for headquarters.

Special Merit winners were Isaac Clinesmith for big house and Spencer Gering for Harry Potter.

4-H Department

The 4-H department, under the leadership of Janette and Buck Hollenback and Carla Jerue had more than 190 entries.

There were 15 total entries for 4-H still life activities and Special Merit winners were Heidi Hennings, fashion review; Kierstin Witt, fashion review; and Peyton Curtis, demonstration.

In the category 4-H still life Haley Oestreich took Best of Class for dilly beans, Special Merits on beach sunset acrylic and beaded bracelet, and Best of Class for a scarf. Heather Hennings earned Special Merit on pajama shorts.

Chris Jerue earned Special Merits on dried green and red peppers, granola bars, girl’s apron, pillowcase, rolled paper mirror. Jerue received Best of Class awards for apple rings, coffee cake exceptionale, latch-hook pillow and both Best of Class and Best of Show awards for dried soup mix, oatmeal coconut drops, butterfly pillow. Jerue also earned the Edna Langenheder 4-H Food Science Award for Food and Nutrition entry and a Washington Association of Wheat Growers Fair Baking Award Second Place, sponsored by the Association and a Senior Sewing award sponsored by Wild Flowers Quilt Shop.

Kierstin Witt received a Special Merit on an apron. Special Merit awards also went to Matt Gill for “Circle of Love” surgical cap, Ethan Dennis for “Dreamsicle” cookie mix, and Ben Dennis for “Dreamsicl” cookie mix.

TanAn Hollenback received the Junior Sewing Award, sponsored by Wild Flowers Quilt Shop as well as the second place Edna Langenheder 4-H Food Science Award in Food and Nutrition, sponsored by the Edna Langenheder Estate and the 4-H Leaders Council. Hollenback also received Best of Class and Best of Show awards for red cabbage relish, zucchini coconut cupcakes, shorts, framed mirror, and a photo titled, “Dinner on the Werster Dam.” Best of Class award went to Hollenback’s dried sage and chunky brownies. Special Merit awards were for Hollenback’s pillowcase, and photographs of steps in drying and Palace of Westminster, London. The Washington Association of Wheat Growers also named Hollenback with first place Wheat King award.

Best of Class awards went to Ben Dennis for whole-wheat apple muffins and to Bailey Dennis for whole wheat bread. Mike Oestreich received the third place Edna Langenheder 4-H Food Science Award in Food and Nutrition, also sponsored by 4-H Leaders Council.

4-H Record Books

Alice Weber had a total of 30 entries in this department.

Gale and Irma Gfeller sponsored Best of Show awards that went to Haley Oestreich, senior record book, Skyler Oestreich, intermediate record book, Katie Schell, intermediate record book, and Bryce Pichette-Esser, junior record book.

Alice Weber sponsored Special Merit awards that were earned by Heather Hennings, senior record book, Heidi Hennings, intermediate record book, Rachel Nygren, junior record book and Katheran Gingrich, junior record book.

Special Merits were awarded to record books by: Heather Hennings for story and supplemental information, Haley Oestreich for overall neatness and presentation. Special Merits received for story in record books went to Skyler Oestreich, Heidi Hennings, Katheran Gingrich and Bryce Pichette. Rachel Nygren received Special Merit for first-year book.

Horses

Rhonda Schafer was superintendent.

Gymkhana high point winners in age category nine and under: Harlee Hennings and Julia Klein. Nine to 11, Adi Claussen; 11-17: Peyton Curtis and 18 and over, Kim Leonard.

4-H horse show results for Showmanship included juniors: Reserve Grand champion: Rachel Nygren and Grand champion, Peyton Curtis. Seniors Reserve Grand champion: Megan Allen and Grand Champion Haley Oestreich. FFA winners included Reserve Grand champion Amanda Woodard and Grand Champion Jason Hulett.

Winner of the Elizabeth Hennings traveling trophy was Haley Oestreich and she gets to keep it as she has won it three years in a row.

Bareback equitation winners included juniors Grand Champion, Peyton Curtis and seniors Grand Champion Haley Oestreich. In the English equitation division juniors Grand Champion, Rachel Schell, seniors Grand Champion Haley Oestreich and intermediate Grand Champion, Katie Schell.

English pleasure division winners included juniors Grand Champion, Rachel Schell and seniors Grand Champion Haley Oestreich. In the division of Western equitation winners included juniors Reserve Grand Champion, Peyton Curtis, and Grand Champion, Rachel Schell and seniors Grand Champion went to Haley Oestreich. FFA Reserve Grand Champion went to Jason Hulett and Grand Champion, Amanda Woodard.

Western pleasure division winners were juniors Reserve Grand Champion, Rachel Nygren and Grand Champion, Peyton Curtis. Intermediate Grand Champion, Katie Schell. seniors Grand Champion, Haley Oestreich and FFA Reserve Grand Champion, Amanda Woodard, Grand Champion, Jason Hulett. In the trail division, juniors Reserve Grand Champion went to Peyton Curtis and Grand Champion to Rachel Schell. Intermediate Grand Champion was received by Katie Schell.

Reserve high-point performance showman was Rachel Schell. High-point was Haley Oestreich. High-point winners of the open horse show were 17 and under, Rachel Schell and 18 and over, Ashley Smith.

Sheep and Goats

Dana Telecky headed this department with 26 entries.

Lamb market winners included: Matthew Leffel, Ritzville FFA, Grand Champion; Maya Wahl, Lind FFA, Reserve Grand Champion; Tara Tellefson, Lind Learners 4-H, Grand Champion; Heather Hennings, 4-H, Reserve Grand Champion.

Lamb Fitting and Showing winners were: Sydney Nelson, Ritzville FFA, Grand Champion; Maya Wahl, Lind FFA, Reserve Grand Champion; Tara Tellefson, Lind Learners 4-H, Grand Champion; Merlee Liberty, Reserve Grand Champion.

In the 4-H goat division, Josh Van Slyke, Lind FFA, earned Grand Champion Market and Reserve Grand Champion Market as well as Grand Champion Fitting and Showing. P.J. Carter, Range Riders 4-H, earned Reserve Grand Champion Market and Reserve Grand Champion Fitting and Showing. Meghan Allen, Range Riders 4-H, took home Grand Champion Market and Grand Champion Fitting and Showing.

Beef

Debbie and Randy Kulm and Andy Williams supervised this department with a total of 16 entries.

Entries included in 4-H division were seven market steers, three prospect steers. In FFA there were five market steers and Open Class had one heifer.

Winners and awards for the FFA Market division: Mackenzie Ellis, Grand Champion; Derrick Laird, Reserve Grand Champion. In FFA Showmanship: Mackenzie Ellis, Grand Champion; Derrick Laird, Reserve Grand Champion.

In 4-H Market: Taylor Kulm, Grand Champion; Skyler Oestreich, Reserve Grand Champion. In 4-H Showmanship: Tyann Tellefson, Grand Champion; Tara Tellefson, Reserve Grand Champion.

Champion Heifer went to Blake Esser.

Swine

A total of 49 entries were handled by Mike Doyle and Andy Robbins.

Market class winners were: Bryson Gering, FFA Grand Champion; Brandon Knodel, FFA Reserve Grand Champion. Abby Gering, 4-H Grand Champion; Abby Gering, 4-H Reserve Grand Champion.

Fitting and Showing winners went to: Brandon Knodel, FFA Grand Champion; Micheala Doyle, FFA Reserve Grand Champion. Mikey Oestreich, 4-H Grand Champion; Bryce Pichette, 4-H Reserve Grand Champion.

Poultry and Rabbit

Janet Manke headed this department with a total of 31 entries.

4-H Rabbit winners, also receiving a $25 gift card to Connell Oil Inc, donated by Dale and Yvonne Anderson were: P.J. Carter, Senior Grand Champion Fitting and Showing, Katie Manke, Intermediate Grand Champion Fitting and Showing and Adam Manke, Junior Grand Champion Fitting and Showing.

Best of Breed and Best of Breed opposite sex awards went to P.J. Carter and Katie Manke with Manke also receiving Reserve Champion Market. Adam Manke received Best of Show, Best of Breed twice and Champion Market.

Abby Gering won Best of Breed for rabbit in open division.

FFA Poultry Best of Breed winner was Brandon Chapman. Open Poultry Best of Show and Best of Breed winner was Emma Dennis.

Herdsmanship

First place winners were: Horse Department, Saddlewarmers 4-H. Rabbit and Poultry, Manke Family 4-H. Sheep and Goats, Ritzville Livestock 4-H. Swine, Lind Livestock 4-H. Beef, Lind Learners 4-H.

Dog Show

Becca Carter supervised this year’s dog show with a total of nine entries.

Becca Carter earned Best of Show for “Jill” and Julie Hartz won Best of Class for “Tucker.”
