    Brandon Cline, Managing Editor|Updated May 30, 2019

An ominous beginning couldn't put a damper on this year's Art in the Park, as the show staged its third annual event at the Ritzville City Park and is beginning to feel like a mainstay during Memorial Day weekend. Wet conditions on Friday forced exhibitors to close up shop in the afternoon on the first day of the show. But weather conditions were much improved on Saturday, much to the delight of the exhibitors and Mayor Gary Cook, who was overseeing the art show in his...

  • Letter to the Editor: Protect the skin that you are in

    Updated May 30, 2019

May is Skin Cancer Month, and may my story inspire you to health. I lost a friend to undiagnosed skin cancer and that event saved me. I started going to the dermatologist and in May 1990 I was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma that needed immediate care. I had surgery in June that found that the skin cancer had grown down to my heart. Unable to know if all the cancer was removed, I took an early retirement. 27 years later I am still around thanks to my early detection. There are things you should know about skin cancer:...

  • Worst Seat In The House: Age

    Dale Anderson, Sports Columnist|Updated May 30, 2019

As I get older I notice things a bit differently than others do. Maybe you do the same. When I hear or read about the death of someone I vividly remember from my younger days it makes me think about why I remember that person. This past week the sporting world lost two athletes. The first was former Green Bay QB Bart Starr who passed away at the age of 85. Starr was the winning QB in the first two AFL-NFL World Championship games which would later be known as the Super Bowl....

  • Three LRS tracksters compete at 2B State Championships

    Steve Salins, Reporter|Updated May 30, 2019

Track isn't an easy sport. You're very alone-run, throw, jump-all by yourself. No offensive line to block for you, no open teammate to pass your shot to, no outfielder to back you up or catch your pole in the vault. Alone-out in front of everyone in shorts and a light jersey. It isn't like football where you cover everything up-including your face-so no one is quite sure when you either do well or make a mistake. And track is not much of a team sport; the only "team" in track...

  • Business Column: Could Seattle Put on a World's Fair Today?

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated May 30, 2019

On April 21, 1962, the Seattle World’s Fair opened. The “Century 21 Exhibition” ran for six months, drew 11 million visitors, turned a profit and left the Northwest with a wonderful Seattle Center. Well over a half century later, many of the fair’s landmarks remain and the Center’s 73-acres is a gathering place for people from all walks of life. It is Seattle’s Central Park. The Space Needle has become Seattle’s landmark. Conceived in an architect’s notebook, it was construc...

  • Memorial Day Column: The stories we must remember

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated May 30, 2019

On Memorial Day, we honor our nation’s servicemembers who have given the ultimate sacrifice. We surround their families and loved ones with prayers and support. We lay flowers on memorials, make visits to monuments, and we pay tribute to their service by lowering our flags to half-mast. While it may be easy to associate Memorial Day weekend with barbeques, a day off from work or school, and the start of summer, we cannot forget that there is a reason we observe this day – and each of them have a story. Our military mem...

  • Iron Legacy Ranch aims to serve

    Steve Salins, Reporter|Updated May 30, 2019

A large, red riding Arena seems misfit among green and brown rolling hills, but that is the focal point of the Iron Legacy Ranch located south of Ritzville and east of Highway 261. The Ranch opened on May 4, 2019 with a public BBQ, facility tours, horse demonstrations, campfire and a square dance. Over 300 visitors attended.
