Four Broncos advance to state

Lind-Ritzville finishes fifth at regionals

SPANGLE - The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague boys finished fifth as a team Saturday, Feb. 10, at the 1B/2B Region 3 wrestling tournament at Liberty High School.

Jenkins (Chewelah) won the tournament with 146.5 team points, followed by Reardan with 124, Northwest Christian (Colbert) with 105 and Liberty with 102.5.

The Broncos scored 101 team points.

Nearby St. John-Endicott finished 18th with 11 team points.

The Broncos had three individual champions – Carson Kubik at 144, Gabe Smith at 215 and Brock Tracy at 285.

Kubik pinned his first opponent, Wyatt Stout of Almira/Coulee-Hartline in 41 seconds. In the semfinals, he won by technical fall (16-0 in 5:09) over Titan Tapia of Jenkins (Chewelah).

He won the title bout with a technical fall (18-2 in 3:45) over Hudson Somes of Northwest Christian.

At 215, Smith opened by pinning Tyson Kane of Mary Walker in 1:44 and then Treven Houston of Wilbur-Creston in 1:24.

In his championship match, he won by major decision, 15-5, over Noah Butler of Almira/Coulee-Hartline.

Tracy opened with a bye at 285 and then pinned his way to a title.

He pinned Bryson Sobosky of Jenkins (Chewelah) in 1:51 and then Kaden Hippler of Kettle Falls in 5:17 to win gold.

The only other Lind-Ritzville medalist is Octavio Parades Martinez, who finished third at 113 pounds.

Martinez opened with a bye and then lost an 8-3 decision to Spencer Duty of Selkirk.

In the wrestlebacks, Martinez pinned Deon Richardson of Jenkins in 1:28. And in the match for the bronze medal, he pinned David Phillips of Northwest Christian in 4:01.

Martinez, Kubik, Smith and Tracy all advance to the state Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome this Friday and Saturday.

In other regional action for the Broncos:

132 pounds - Alex Bonner finished sixth. He pinned Aaden Baergen of Almira/Coulee-Hartline in 27 seconds in his opening match and then was pinned by Seth Finley of Mary Walker in 2:22 and Dillon Gassenberg of Colfax in 1:40. In the match for fifth-place, he was pinned by Davenport's Brendon Peters-Biggs in 2:27.

138 pounds - Wyatt Rosman lost his first two matches by fall, in 2:38 to Porter Word of Almira/Coulee-Hartline and in 1:00 to Dillan Dituri of Jenkins.

144 pounds - Turner Slack lost his first to matches by fall, in 39 seconds to Justin Bumgardener of Republic-Curlew and in 1:18 to Landon Goodwin of Wilbur-Creston.

150 pounds – Pete Spain finished sixth. He was pinned by Everett Jolley of Inchelium in 5:35 in his opening match, then pinned Noah Salz of Asotin in 2:35. He was then pinned by Dakota Katzer of Jenkins and disqualified in the match against Thorne Tissue of Liberty.

In girls wrestling, Emmy Klewin qualified for regionals at 170 pounds. However, she did not compete due to injuries sustained earlier in the season and exacerbated at subregionals Feb. 3.

St. John-Endicott

The only Eagle to qualify for regionals finished in fifth place.

Wrestling at 113 pounds, Cameron Mathia opened by pinning Deon Richardson of Jenkins in 44 seconds to reach the semifinals. But he was pinned in that match by Caiden Kassel of Liberty Launch Academy in 2:59.

In the wrestlebacks, he lost a 10-7 decision to David Phillips of Northwest Christian. In his final match, for fifth place, he pinned Richardson again, this time in 41 seconds.
