Local and Personal

Mr. Benj. Martin, the accommodating cashier of the Adams County Bank, informs us that although January was a quiet month that that institution handled over $35,000 worth of grain drafts and paid out about $50,000 in cash during the same period. This certainly speaks volumes for the financial condition of Adams County.

A son of Hon. J. M. Adams and Johnnie Long, son of Clark Long, engaged in a lively scrap at the school house yesterday. Hard epithets were applied, rocks and other missiles were brought into use, and the boys succeeded in knocking out the differences between them in pretty fair shape. From appearances, the case will be heard by Police Judge Staser sometime today. Rather early for spring fights.

Local Brevities

The county auditor has received 1918 applications for motor licenses up to Jan. 30, as compared with 837 to the same date last year.

The N. P. is shipping about 150 carloads of ice from Pifer siding at Sprague Lake each day. The ice goes to the storehouses at Pasco for use in icing refrigerator cars. The warm weather will doubtless put a stop to operations. It may be that this will be the last season ice is drawn by the road from Sprague Lake as company officials were in Pasco in the fall investigating the matter of erecting an artificial ice plant.

Pete Greenwalt's garage on East Alder was completely destroyed by raging flames Tuesday evening in less than half an hour. Greenwalt said Wednesday his losses amounted to approximately $5,000 worth of equipment and $2,000 for the building. He said he carried about $4,000 worth of insurance. Plans to rebuild, he declared, depending entirely on the amount of the insurance settlement.

Window replacement

planned at courthouse

Some windows at the Adams County Courthouse soon will be replaced following action by the Adams County Commissioners on Monday. Ten windows, including those in the Superior Court room, are to be replaced with insulated bronze-tinted windows. Some of the 10 will feature horizontal sliders while those in the courtroom will have slides in the bottom window section. The board approved the replacement based on estimates not to exceed $25,000. The replacement project will begin once weather permits.
