Local boys struggle at M2 Mallet

SPOKANE - Local boys were unable to land anyone on the podium at the M2 Mallet wrestling tournament Dec. 23.

The Broncos scored a total of 16.0 team points in the tournament that featured 25 teams, many from much larger schools. Moscow, Idaho, won the team title with 213.5 points.

Wrestling at 120 pounds, Waylon Rosman had the best showing for the Broncos, with two wins.

He opened the tournament with a bye and then pinned Sawyer Sullivan of Mount Spokane in 2:35. In his quarterfinal match, however, he was pinned by Tristan Zaragoza of North Central in 1:06.

In the wrestlebacks, Rosman pinned Broncos teammate Wyatt Gibler in 2:41, before he was eliminated by technical fall (19-0 in 3:29) by Konnor Spradling of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls).

Gibler opened with a bye, but was pinned in his first match by Nakoa Rocha of Northwest Christian (Colbert) in 1:33.

He then received another bye before pinning William Battin of North Central in 2:15.

He was eliminated from the tournament by Rosman.

In other Lind-Ritzville/Sprague results:

113 pounds – Octavio Paredez Martinez was pinned in his opening match by Kalob Riccelli of East Valley (Spokane Valley in 3:23. Martinez then pinned Arthur Wedge of Rogers in 1:09, before being eliminated by Kaidn Montgomery-Jones of Ridgeline by fall in 2:52.

132 pounds – Alexander Bonner opened by pinning Justice Kiki of Mount Spokane in 1:48. But he lost his next two match, by pin to Logan Bright of Gonzaga Prep in 1:18 and by forfeit to Liam Ziegman of Ferris.

138 pounds – Wyatt Rosman opened with a bye, but was pinned in his next two matches – in 1:14 by Emerson Stuhlberg of Ridgeline and then in 1:13 by Julian Zuniga of Ferris.

144 pounds – Turner Slack went 0-2 on the day, pinned by Justin Bumgardener of Republic-Curlew in 28 seconds and by Adam McGuire of Shadle Park in 2:13.

175 pounds – Travis Redburn opened with a loss by pin to Preston Yim of Gonzaga Prep in 5:50. He then received a bye and was pinned by Timofey Basargin of Mary Walker in 2:18.

190 pounds – Traye Redburn opened with a bye and then was pinned by Jeramiah Palmer of Sandpoint in 43 seconds. He received a second bye in the consolation round before being pinned by Swington Tamashiro of Rogers in 3:11.

190 pounds – John Branham opened with a bye, then was pinned by Reed Whidman of Liberty (Spangle) in 1:32. He received another bye before being pinned by Beau Tampien of Mount Spokane by fall in 1:06.
