Bronco girls head to Colfax undefeated

RITZVILLE – The Broncos girls volleyball team was set to take on its toughest league rival on Tuesday night, Sept. 19, when it was scheduled to travel to Colfax.

This year, however, the league leaders are different.

Where Colfax Bulldogs (2-2) were the Northeast 2B’s powerhouse volleyball team last year, the Bulldogs are 2-2.

And although the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague girls had a respectable finish at state last year, the Bulldogs went into Tuesday night’s matchup undefeated.

The Bronco girls opened their season Sept. 7, with a 3-1 win on the road at Odessa.

In that matchup, the Broncos opened with a 25-12 in Set 1, but dropped Set 2 to the Tigers, 25-20.

After regrouping, the Lind-Ritzville girls put the game away winning Sets 3 and 4, 25-16 and 25-23, respectively.

The local girls have been playing strong since, topping Wilbur-Creston-Keller, 3-0, on Sept. 12, and Columbia (Burbank), 3-0, on Sept. 13.

Set scores were not provided for those games, and individual statistics for the Broncos have yet to be reported.

The Broncos will round out their week on Thursday, Sept. 21, at Asotin.

Meanwhile, nearby in St. John, the Eagles girls are also off to a solid season. The St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse team (5-2-1) have outplayed several larger teams.

The Eagles defeated Odessa and Pomeroy, both Class 1B schools, 3-0. Then in a tournament Friday, Sept. 8, they knocked off both Orcas Island and Brewster, Class 2B schools, then tied with Wapato, a Class 1A school.

The Eagles girls lost their semifinal to Manson, 2-0, and Annie Wright (Tacoma), 2-0.

St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse returned home Thursday, Sept. 14, where they spiked league rival Colton, 3-0.

The Eagle girls were scheduled to play league rivals Garfield-Palouse (2-1) on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and Oakesdale (4-0) on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Oakesdale is the two-time defending state 1B champion.
