Broncos tune up at jamboree

Football season opens Friday in Colfax

RITZVILLE – The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague boys football team looked tough in the annual Bronco Jamboree, a pre-season tuneup this year that featured five teams.

In the jamboree Saturday, Aug. 26, the Broncos hosted the Connell Eagles, Warden Cougars, Nathan Hale Raiders and the Jenkins (Chewelah) Cougars.

Under jamboree rules, each team's offense was given 10 plays to score against the remaining four teams' defenses.

The Cougars were the only participating league rival, after the Davenport Gorillas dropped out due to a lack of player turnout and decision to drop into 8-man football contests.

Jenkins brought an outside game, rushing off tackle and passing to the flats for their biggest gains of the day.

The Broncos ran up the middle and outside against, with running back Brody Boness breaking loose for several big gains.

Quarterback Travis Redburn also had several gains, behind the blocking of Boness. He also completed several passes, while leading the Broncos into the endzone multiple times.

Neither statistics nor score was kept during the jamboree.

Another Class 2B team, the Warden Cougars, posed little difficulty for the Broncos, on either offense or defense.

Connell, a Class 1A team, played more smashmouth football, rushing straight at the defense for big gains.

The Eagles defense also held tough, causing several fumbles during the jamboree.

The pre-season tuneup marks the start of the 2023 high school football season.

At 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, the Broncos will play their season and league-opener at Colfax against the Bulldogs.

Last year, the teams faced off for the league-opener as well.

The Broncos won that contest, 35-12, at home on Jimmie Snider Field.
