Local and Personal

If Myers & Shipman don't remove those goods from the sidewalk in the rear of their store, somebody is liable to steal a wagon load or two.

The Demorest medal contest at the courthouse last Friday evening was a rare treat to those who attended. All the contestants did splendid and it was a contest in very truth. Miss Hannah Scheuerle was the lucky one that bore off the prize. Miss Graham, Mrs. Shipman and Orpha Wilburn each rendered an appropriate solo, and all passed well except the insane whistling and stamping of the young ruffians in the rear of the hall. Their performance would disgrace an Apache war dance.

Peter Miller was brought before Judge Staser yesterday charged with assaulting another with a beer glass. A $15 bond was deposited for Miller's appearance at 2 o'clock today.

Bakery boosts price of bread

A&C Bakery here raised the price of bread from 42 to 45 cents a loaf Monday. Distraught by rising costs of everything that goes into bread, Al and Carol Schlaht wonder how long they'll be able to keep in business. Aug. 6 the local bakery raised its large white loaf from 39 cents to 42 cents a loaf. Immediately volume sold dropped by 50 per cent. Though some of that loss did come back, the Schlahts wonder if they'll ever resume their former volume.

Asked the reason for such a drastic loss of business from a 3-cent price increase, Al said he believes people generally are doing more for themselves. One thing they can do is bake their own bread. He's tempted, though, to ask the housewife who's turned to baking her own bread where she obtained her flour.

Melinda Brown ready for music director role

It seems a little ironic that one of Melinda Brown's first duties as Ritzville School District music director will be the Ritzville Festival's Parade on Sept. 5, a parade in which her predecessor, Dennis Koch, will serve as parade marshal. Brown steps into the role at Ritzville after receiving her bachelor of arts degree in music education with an endorsement in chemistry from Whitworth College this past spring.
