Local and Personal

John Bovee has purchased property opposite the post office and is erecting a building, part of which will be used for a meat market.

Paha has been stricken from the list of live post offices and those who have been receiving mail there are ordering to Ritzville or Lind.

The home of the Krehbeil brothers, near Lind, was destroyed by fire last Wednesday. Very little of the contents of the house was saved.

Killed by a freight train

Last Sunday morning at 8:20 o'clock as a special freight pulled out east, and was opposite the flouring mills, a man by the name of Allen Monroe undertook to catch the rods and missing his hold was thrown under the wheels and instantly killed.

He was, according to the testimony of Frank Lawrence, who claimed to have known him two years, a native of Scotland and has relatives living at Rat Harbor Portage and Sidney, Cape Britian Island.

Deceased had been in Ritzville about six weeks. The middle of the body was mashed to a jelly, two or more wheels of the caboose having passed over it. The coroner's jury brought in a verdict to the effect that the death was due to the deceased's own negligence and carelessness, and they entirely exonerated everyone, especially the Northern Pacific company, from any blame or responsibility whatsoever.

Ritzville's Fourth is safe and sane

Ritzville's Fourth of July was strictly safe and sane. The town was nearly deserted, most folks going to nearby lakes and resorts or to celebrations in the neighboring towns. During the afternoon there was a score or more gathered at the Pastime to catch the bulletins from the Dempsey-Gibbons fight.

New federal wheat

policy is discussed

A new type of government wheat insurance-"the best so far," according to the Adams County ACA office-was announced this week by Carl Heinemann, county ACA chairman. The policies, written by the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation, insure wheat in the fields against any form of loss due to unavoidable causes. These "unavoidable causes" include drought, flood, hail, wind, frost, excessive rain, snow, wildlife, hurricane, tornado, insect infestation, and plant disease. But wheat is not protected against loss from "neglect or poor farming" or after it has been taken from the fields.

Lind school to receive new

business machines for class

LIND-School directors here approved a three-year plan to put new office machines in the commercial department of the high school during their July board meeting Monday evening. Their initial outlay of $2,900.73 is the first of a three-year expenditure to put 15 IBM Selectric typewriters and dictation equipment at the disposal of the high school students and, hopefully, be available for adult education if an interest is shown, said Dr. B. Dewayne Gower, superintendent.

Dr. Oler to begin practice July 24

Dr. Ralph Older plans to begin practice here on July 24, he said Tuesday. Dr. Oler said he will be in Seattle beginning July 17 for a two- or three-day orientation. His practice will be established in the Ritzville clinic in a separate office and examination room of the building originally designed for use by two doctors. It will be the beginning of his medical practice, the young doctor said. Until now he has been in internship, coming here from San Jose, Calif.
