Farmers' Fest rolls through LaCrosse

Speeders traverse Adams and Whitman Counties

LACROSSE - The Farmers' Festival was a confirmed success, bringing alumni home and visitors to town June 23-25.

LaCrosse Business Group members Chelsey Startin and Paige Collins said hundreds rolled into town via tractor, truck, car and even railroad speeder cars.

"It was fabulous," Collins said, noting the Car Cruise and Park on Friday night and the Firefighters' barbecue fundraiser were fun and very popular.

"They had so many people coming for dinner that they ran out of food," she said.

Startin added that while the barbecue was separate from the festival, it did well.

"It was a great weekend," Startin said, adding the crowd exceeded expectations at all the activities.

Friday was also the second annual Car Cruise and Park, Startin said.

"We had 26 cars in the cruise," she said, adding there were more spectators than families.

Collins also noted that more cars showed up this year.

Kurt McNeilly won best in the show last year, but this year his dad Dave McNeilly won, she said.

"The sidewalk chalk art was a huge success," Startin added.

Most activities took place Saturday.

There was a parade, helicopter rides, vendors in the park, a barbecue, silent auction, several yard sales, kids games and a swim-in at the pool. There was even a Rolling Pin Toss competition for the women in town.

"The parade and the helicopter ride, fun in the park was a blast," Collins said, adding the weather was "perfect" for the event.

The railway speeders made a pit stop twice in town on Saturday, and then returned Sunday for more rides as a fundraiser for LaCrosse Community Pride.

The speeders traveled to and from Colfax as well as Adams County.

"The railroad runs right past by our driveway, so we waved at my husband," she said.

Startin's sister-in-law, Jill Startin, won this year's Rolling Pin Toss.

"She beat us all by a mile," she said. "So, she'll take home the traveling roller pin for the year."

Startin added that the winner gets to sign the traveling roller pin, which comes back for the following year for the next winner to sign.

Collins called this year's silent auction a huge success, as was the vendor market in the park, the street dance and other activities.
