Eagles score state track medals

Pedro Molina wins silver in long jump

YAKIMA – Having earned several medals, the St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse Eagles track team finished 12th in girls and 13th in boys at the state track meet Thursday through Saturday at Zaepfel Stadium.

The girls scored 15 team points to tie for 12th with Lopez, Neah Bay and Orcas Island.

Garfield-Palouse won the state title with 98 team points; the Odessa girls were fourth with 62.

The Eagle boys scored 18 team points for 13th place, just ahead of league rivals Tekoa-Rosalia in 14th and Valley Christian in 15th.

Evergreen Lutheran and Mary Walker (Springdale) tied for the boys team title with 56 points each, followed by Pomeroy in third with 52.

The Eagle boys were led by senior Pedro Molina, who won silver in long jump with a personal record leap of 19-07.50.

Senior teammate Rory Maloney scored a third-place medal and fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, respectively.

Maloney finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.34 seconds.

Evergreen Lutheran senior Sam Plocher won, followed by Pe Ell junior Carter Phels in second.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Maloney finished with a personal record time of 42.85 seconds, good enough for fifth in the state.

Plocher and Phelps went, one-two, with league rival Colin Hughes of Wellpinit finishing third in 42.43.

Fourth-place was won by sophomore Mason Wright of Odessa, who had a time of 42.43 seconds.

The Eagle boys 4X400 team of Molina, Maloney, junior Will Tollett and freshman David Logen also qualified for state, but finished 14th in the preliminary heats with a time of 4:02.60, not fast enough to reach the finals.

Maloney also competed in triple jump, where he had a leap of 37-06.00 for 11th place.

In girls competition, it was underclassmen setting the tone in field events for the Eagles.

Freshman Chloe Waddell struck silver in shot put with a personal record throw of 36-01.50. Senior Morgan Thomas of DeSales won the event with a throw of 42-02.00.

Waddell also finished 10th in state in discuss with a throw of 93-02.

Sophomore teammate Emery Molina also brought home medals.

She finished fourth in pole vault with a personal record of 8-06.00 and seventh in high jump, clearing 4-08.00.

Junior Eagle teammate Julia Guske also broke into the Top 10 in pole vault, finishing ninth in state after clearing 7-00.00.
