Local athletes qualify for state

Broncos, Eagles place at districts

COLFAX – The Lind-Ritzville and St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse boys and girls track meets finished mid-pack-with several athletes earning state berths – at the 1B/2B District 7 and 9 meets Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20.

In girls team scoring, the St. John-Endicott Eagles finished with 56.5 team points for sixth in the 1B division and ninth overall. Meanwhile, the Bronco girls scored 38 team points for seventh place in 2B and 14th overall.

In boys team scoring, the Broncos scored 34 team points for eighth place in division and 17th overall. The Eagles boys scored 43 team points for seventh in 1B and 14th overall.

Nearly 30 schools participated in the state-qualifying meet.

Senior Hayden Melcher led the way for the Bronco boys, racing to a second-place finish in the 100-meter with a time of 11.35 seconds to advance to state. He also finished second in the 200-meter with a time of 23.20 for a state-berth.

Melcher also anchored the boys 4X100 relay team (Melcher, sophomore J.P. McAnally, junior Shawn Steinberger and freshman Damon Schilling), which finished fourth with a time of 45.49, and is headed to state.

McAnally tacked on another fourth-place finish in triple jump with a personal record of 39:02.50 and a ninth-place finish in the 3,200-meter with a time of 12:32.54.

Other Top 10 finishes for the Bronco boys include:

Steinberger, fifth 400-meter, 54:08; and eighth, 200-meter, 24.99.

Sophomore Carson Kubik, sixth, pole vault, 9-06; 10th, 110-meter hurdles, 20.97

Junior Caleb Heater, 10th, 300-meter hurdles, 50.70;

Junior Bridger Moore, 10th, 1600-meter, 4:55.37

Schilling, 9th, 400-meter, 55.74.

In girls competition, it was freshman Zoe Galbreath setting the bar.

Galbreath won the pole vault, clearing 9-00, a personal record, to advance to state.

Galbreath also added a third-place finish in the 400-meter with a time of 1:05.72, a personal record.

Senior Myra Miller, too, also earned a state berth.

She finished second in discus with a loft of 115-07 to earn a state berth.

Miller also finished sixth in shot put with a toss of 33-0.5.

The girls 4X400 relay team of sophomores Claire Wellsandt and Addy Colbert, Galbreath and Miller did well, too.

The local girls finished fourth with a time of 4:41.68.

The same lineup earned the Broncos sixth place in the 4X200 relay with a time of 2:05.59.

In other Top 10 finishes for the Bronco girls:

Wellsandt, sixth, 300-meter hurdles, 55.24; 10th, 100-meter, 14.34

Eagles track

For the Eagle boys, senior Rory Maloney set the pace, taking second in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles with times of 16.33 and 43.45, respectively.

Maloney also qualified for state with a third-place finish in triple jump with a leap of 39-06, a personal record.

The 4x400 relay team (Maloney, senior s William Hubert and Pedro Molina and junior Will Tollett) was fifth in 3.53.92.

Molina also earned a state spot with a second-place finish in long jump with 19-01, a personal record.

Other Eagle Top 10 finishes include:

Molina, eighth, 400-meter, 57.92

Hubert, fifth, 110-meter hurdles, 19.99; seventh, 300-meter hurdles, 49.76;

Sophomore Joel Larsen, seventh, pole vault, 8-06.

A St. John-Endicott freshman set the tone for the Eagle girls.

Chloe Waddell took third in shot put with a toss of 33-09. She also took third in discuss with a distance of 99-02, a personal record.

Waddell added an eighth-place finish in javelin with a flight of 83-06.

The Eagle girls were also dominant in the girls pole vault, where four of the Top 6 placers were from St. John-Endicott.

Sophomore Emery Molina was third, clearing 8-00. Junior Julia Guske was fourth with 7-00. And freshman Keira Maloney and senior Holly Thomas tied for fifth, both clearing 6-foot.

Thomas also had a sixth-place finish in shot put with a toss of 30-10.

Meanwhile, the girls 4X400 relay team finished sixth on the track with a time of 50:20.24.

The team included eighth-grader Emma Quigley, freshmen Kate Roberts and Ruby Sandoval, and sophomore Halee Berg.

Other Eagle girl Top 10 finishes include:

Guske, sixth, triple jump 29-01.5; eighth, 300-meter hurdles, 58.60; and seventh, 100-meter hurdles, 21.30, a personal record.

Emery Molina, fifth (tie), high jump, 4-10; sixth, 300-meter hurdles, 54.29, a personal record; and sixth, 100-meter hurdles, 20.22, a personal record.

Sophomore Sarah Quigley, seventh, discus, 76-03; ninth, shot put, 27-09.5.

Keira Maloney, seventh, 3,200-meter, 16:08.66.

Local athletes who qualified for state will take to the track and field again starting Thursday, May 25, at Zaepfel Stadium at Eisenhower High School in Yakima.

The meet runs through Saturday, May 27, with the first events beginning at 3:40 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, events start at 10 a.m., and on Saturday, at 9 a.m.
