Local girl crowned Super Cattle Showman

Local youth participate in livestock show

SPOKANE – A local girl was recently named Super Cattle Showman for her efforts at the 88th annual Junior Livestock Show at Spokane County Fair and Expo Center.

Alyssa Williams of the Lind-Ritzville FFA received the honor at the event that included more than 230 Future Farmers of America competitors and 150 4-H competitors from across Eastern Washington.

The award, announced Monday, May 15, came after Williams won honors at the show, including Reserve Grand Champion for FFA Market Steer, where she sold her 1,371-pound steer for $4 per pound .

Williams also won two Grand Champion awards – one for her FFA Prospect Steer and one for Freshman/Sophomore FFA Beef Fitting and Showing.

Williams was among several Adams County participants, who participated in a market auction as market and showmanship competitions in which youth showed off their skills in meat and livestock judging, public speaking and other activities.

Overall in the livestock auction, the show featured 80 entries in beef, 214 in swine, 63 lambs and 34 goats. The sales generated $532,541.45.

More than 1,000 elementary school students also joined the event as part of the Farm Fair, to learn about wheat, cattle, sheep, dairy production and other topics.

Other award-winners from the area include:

• Landon Williams, a member of the Ritzville Livestock $-H club, won Junior Reserve Champion in 4-H Beef Fitting and Showing. He also took first-place in the Junior Division of 4-H Livestock Judging.

• Wade Palmer of Ritzville Livestock 4-H won Junior Grand Champion for 4-H Hog Fitting and Showing.

• The Lind-Ritzville FFA team won first-place in the FFA State Livestock Judging competition, followed by Reardan in second and Ellensburg in third. Alyssa Williams and Zoe Galbreath took first and second, respectively, in individual judging.

• Sprague’s Turner Osborne and Damien Jackson won second- and third-place, respectively, in FFA Public Speaking.
