Step up and run for office

I have spent 15-plus years on the City Council and now finishing up 10 years as your mayor.

It all started out with an "appointment." I received a call from the then-mayor; he had a position to fill and was looking for a volunteer.

I was a housewife with two young children and a career hairdresser, having no background in politics nor city government. What I did have was a deep, sincere love for my community.

So, I accepted the appointment as a council member.

The first year was a learning year – learning about procedures and how things get accomplished. I also saw this as an opportunity, as I now had a vote in things.

I would be expected to attend two council meetings per month at 7 p.m. I would be serving on several committees of my choice, plus there would be a pay check at the end of each month.

Here were are now in 2023.

Four positions will be open to fill this year – Ward Nos. 1, 2 and 4, and a two-year at-large position. To run for a ward position, you must reside in that ward. (A map of our wards is available on the city website, or you can call City Hall at 509-659-1930 to find out.) The two-year at-large position can be filled by any citizen living within Ritzville city limits.

The filing period for the City Council positions is May 15.

Our city of Ritzville is on the "edge" of growth and some exciting times. We are annexing areas for future growth, which will include homes, apartments and duplexes.

It will be very rewarding to be a part of the planning of all this.

So, many times when I hear complaints. But it's necessary to step up and work to change things, if you want to make a difference.

This is an opportunity to do something really positive with your life. I realize we are all busy, but how about rearranging our lives a bit and taking a different path – our community needs you. Our community needs new ideas, new thoughts, new energy and even more "mature energy" and thoughts.

Do some "soul searching." Could this be your time?

I hope so.

- Linda Kadlec is the mayor of Ritzville. Email her at [email protected].
