Both girls win one bout at Mat Classic
TACOMA - The Broncos girls wrestling team started the season with two girls.
The team also ended with two girls in the state Mat Classic Tournament on Feb. 17-18 in the Tacoma Dome.
Neither Emmie Klewin nor Myra Miller placed at state, but they both won matches in the small school division, which includes all girls wrestling teams from 1B, 2B, 1A and 2A schools.
Wrestling at 155, Klewin opened by pinning Selena Martinez of Prosser in 1:49 to reach the quarterfinals.
There, she lost by pin to Jessica Polkinghorn of Columbia (White Salmon) in 1:24.
In the consolation round, Klewin was eliminated from the state tournament by Dakota Lees of Tenino, who pinned her in 2:08.
Miller, competing at 190 pounds, was the lighest competitor in the weight class having competed most of the year at 170.
As a regional champion, Miller received a bye in the opening round, but was then pinned in 46 seconds by Ihanna Perez of Grandview.
Perez went on to finish second.
In the consolation round Miller pinned Kikaydi Hokanson of Connell in 33 seconds.
In her final match of the season, Miller was tied 8-8 in the second round with Trinity Tafoya of Tenino, before being pinned in 3:48.
As a team, the Bronco girls tied for 55th place with Liberty (Spangle), Mary Walker (Springdale), Napavine and Zillah, each with 7 points.
Toppenish won the small school girls team title with 299.0 points, followed by White River with 110 and Royal with 70.5.
The Othello girls were 17th overall with 27.5 team points.
