Six boys advance to regional tournament

POMEROY - Several boys will be competing this weekend in the regional wrestling tournament at Reardan after finishing in the Top 4 last Saturday, Feb. 4.

Wyatt Gibler, Waylon Rosman, Kaleb Kuykendall, Pete Spain, Gabe Smith and Brock Tracy all secured a regional match.

Gibler finished fourth at 106 pounds. He lost his first match to eventual champion Preston Neufeld of Reardan by pin in 1:31. In the bout for third place, he lost an 8-6 decision to Nakoa Rocha of Northwest Christian (Colbert).

At 113, Rosman reached the finals after pinning Noah Everett of Davenport in 2:27. He lost the title bout to Moxon Strobel of Liberty (Spangle), being pinned in 1:11.

Kuykendall, wrestling at 132, opened with a loss by pin to Jett Marburger of Liberty (Spangle) in 2:40.

In his second match of the day, he pinned teammate Eric Tweeten in 1:50.

He faced Marburger again in the match for third place, this losing by pin in 1:42.

At the same weight, teammate Tweeten finished fifth and will be an alternate to regionals.

He was pinned by Brendon Peters-Biggs of Davenport in 2:48 in his opening match. After Kuykendall ended his change at a metal, he pinned Justin Hubbard of Northwest Christian (Colbert) in 21 seconds to keep his regional hopes alive.

Spain, an eighth-grader on the team, took fourth at 152 pounds.

He opened with a loss by pin to eventual champion Brody Schillinger of Daveport in 30 seconds. In the match for third place, he was pinned by Sam Young of Northwest Christian (Colbert) in 30 seconds.

At 160 pounds Carson Kubik finished fifth and will also advance as an alternate.

In his opening district match, he was pinned by Josiah Popa of Northwest Christian (Colbert) in 2:38. He then was pinned by another Crusader, Jaxson Hamilton, in 36 seconds.

In the match for fifth place, he pinned Popa in 2:23.

Smith was a silver medalist at 195. He opened with a 7-2 decision over Carson Durbin of Reardaan to reach the title bout.

In that match, he was pinned by Sam Schneider of Davenport in 3:13.

Schneider was later honored as the league's Wrestler of the Year.

Tracy brought home the only boys gold medal.

He received bye to the finals, where he pinned Tristen Burd of Colfax in 2:31 to win the district title.
