First responder fundraiser a big success

Sept. 30 potato fundraiser brings in more than $2,000

RITZVILLE – Call it a success.

Wheatland Bank Branch Manager Dolly Blankenship was thrilled with the response to the bank's Sept. 30 baked potato fundraiser for local first responders.

"This particular branch has supported the School District, senior center and veterans, and we decided to support first responders through this fundraiser," she said.

The Schoonover Hutterian Brethren donated potatoes; Akin's Fresh Market provided brown bags, butter, sour cream, napkins, forks, spoons, salt, pepper and water.

"We got the potatoes, cleaned them, sorted them, baked them, put up tents, and created chaos in the bank's parking lot," Blankenship said.

The police and fire departments, and ambulance association brought vehicles and lights to attract the lunch crowd.

"We didn't know what the turnout would be, so didn't know how long it would last," she said. "We had 10 dozen potatoes and a suggested donation of $10, so expected to raise about $1,200."

"Two hours and 15 minutes later, we were out of baked potatoes and had raised $2,000. It was

stunning."

At the City Council meeting Tuesday night, Blankenship presented checks to Police Chief Dave McCormick and Fire Chief Joel Bell.

Neva Malby, president of the Ritzville Volunteer Ambulance Association, was on call so received a check the next day.

"The fundraiser exceeded expectations on all fronts," Blankenship said. "It's very

heartwarming to contribute to the community that has kept community

banking alive here for over 30 years."
