Seniors on track to graduate

RITZVILLE – Lind-Ritzville High School has 27 seniors on track for graduation June 4, the Lind and Ritzville school boards learned during a meeting last week.

In addition, the district has five seniors who may not be walking in the commencement ceremony.

Of the five, two are attending classes and working on graduation requirements. One is enrolled in the online Lind-Ritzville Academy and two are not attending school, school officials said.

To graduate, students must have earned a combination of 26 credits in foundational and elective courses, and complete a High School and Beyond Plan, a state requirement designed to help students get the most out of high school and think about their future, officials said.

Students who are not on track to graduate can apply for a waiver for up to 2.0 core or elective credits and/or other graduation pathway requirements.

In other business, the boards:

• Approved $117,433.24 to purchase a 6-year math curriculum, including consumables, for all grades. The new curriculum replaces what has been used for an estimated 10 years, and incorporates a “spiral” teaching method. A spiral approach presents a math concept, then revisits the material throughout math levels, adding to what was taught, as opposed to moving on from a concept entirely. A committee of educators has been working for months on selection of new math curriculum. The proposed materials have been available for review in recent weeks and were available for parents at the last teacher conferences.

• Declared Ritzville weight room equipment as surplus, allowing it to be transferred for use in the Lind school district.
