Dakota Killian represents Ritzville in Distinguished Young Women program

Moses Lake girl wins pageant in Pullman

RITZVILLE – A local girl was among the finalists competing for 2022 state Distinguished Young Women Program title Saturday, Aug. 7.

But Lind-Ritzville High School senior Dakota Killian came home empty-handed from the contest won by Moses Lake's Esther Roeber.

The Moses Lake High School High senior received a $3,500 cash scholarship a $500 scholastic award with $200 awards in the talent and fitness judging categories.

Roeber will go on to compete at the annual program scheduled in Mobile, Ala., next summer.

Lind-Ritzville's Distinguished Young Woman, Killian of Ritzville didn't place.

Still, Killian plans to attend Brigham Young University. After college, she wants to pursue a career as a journalist or author.

She is the daughter of Gordon and Lisa Killian.

During the pageant, Killian performed a piano solo, "Qi," by Phildel.

Killian was chosen to represent the Lind-Ritzville community from among four girls vying for the Distinguished Young Women local title.

Sydney Kinch was selected First Finalist at the local contest earlier this year. Amelia Court and Annika Holland were selected Second Finalists.

In addition to Roeber's awards, Katie Wheatley of Pullman was named first runner up and Jessica Cochran of Jenkins High School in Chewelah was second runner-up.

Denni Feali of Garfield-Palouse, Marcy Hardin and Ava Hasenoehl, both of Clarkson, and Emma Bryson of Colfax also won awards.

The participants were evaluated by a panel of judges in the following categories: Scholastics (25%), Interview (25%), Fitness (15%), Self-Expression (15%) and Talent (20%).

Judges this year included Danielle Castro of Bartlesville, Okla .; Rueben Mayes of Pullman Regional Hospital; Emily Herman and Jody Darby, both from Georgia state; and Mackenzie Howe, a former New Hampshire Distinguished Young Women Program winner.

Other participants in Saturday's contest included Abby Whitemarsh of Ellensburg, Adyson Shafer of Almira-Coulee/Hartline and Maggie Meyer of Colton-Uniontown
