Soul Café idea raises concerns and questions

I read with some concern the article in the March 21 edition of the Journal regarding the “Soul Café.” The article did not mention the proposed location of this facility, which I understand is to be at 306 North Division, in the Old Baptist Church building. One of the proponents I contacted stated that it was not to be a “soup kitchen,” but did not deny it would be a drop-in center for homeless, etc. Which then raises all sorts of questions such as hours of operation and just what type of persons the clients need safe haven from?

The project founders have not contacted any persons in the immediate area that will be affected in order to take public comment. The person I contacted did however offer to discuss the project with me. I’m hoping the committee will be prepared to address the community in more detail on or before their April 20 meeting and that all concerned will attend.
