Girls season ends in Spokane

Two Broncos named to All-League teams

SPOKANE – The Broncos girls fastpitch softball season came to an end Saturday, May 20, at the hands of a familiar foe.

The Jenkins Cougars from Chewelah edged the local Lind-Ritzville/Sprague girls, 3-1, in a loser-out, consolation round game in the District 7 Class 2B tournament at the Merkel Sports Complex.

The Broncos entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and Jenkins as No. 3. Jenkins was then eliminated by No. 4-ranked Liberty (Spangle), 7-1.

Northwest Christian (Colbert) won the district title with a narrow, 2-1, winner over top-seeded Colfax.

The Colfax Bulldogs took the No. 2 spot, eliminating Liberty, 11-0.

Both Northwest Christian and Colfax advance to state.

The Crusaders enter the state tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play No. 12 Cle Elum-Roslyn at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 26, on Field No. 3 of the Gateway Complex in Yakima. No. 8 Colfax opens at the same time against No. 9 Raymond-South Bend on Field 4.

In the 3-1 loss to Jenkins, the Broncos struggled to get a hit on Cougars' pitcher Bailey Fuller, who struck out eight in a complete game.

Lind-Ritzville's Hannah Towne and Aeowyn Armstrong pitched for the Broncos in the losing effort.

The Broncos did have a few hits, with Madisyn Cameron, Armstrong, Armstrong and Reeta Dean all making contact.

Despite the loss, two Broncos earned all-league honors.

Town and Harlee Hennings each received Northeast 2B All-League honors, with Towne being named to 1st Team and Hennings to 2nd Team.

"They were recognized at the district tournament on Saturday," Athletic Director Dustan Arlt said. "Great job girls!"
