RITZVILLE – With candidate filings closing last Friday, two county offices will be contested in the 2022 election cycle.
In the race for Adams County sheriff, Ritzville Police Officer Mathew Carlson of Ritzville will challenge incumbent Sheriff Dale J. Wagner of Othello. Both candidates prefer the Republican party.
For County Commissioner District No. 3, incumbent Terry Thompson of Othello is being challenged by Miguel A. “Mike” Garza of Othello.
The two ran against each other in 2018, with Thompson winning the general the election with 57% of the vote. Both candidates prefer the Republican party.
With Washington’s Top 2 primary format, both candidates in the races are expected to advance from the Aug. 2 primary election to the Nov. 4 general election.
In a Top 2 primary, voters choose from all the candidates in the race, regardless of party affiliation. The two candidates receiving the highest percentage of votes advance to the general election.
In other contested races, Phil Peterson and John E. Faure are running against each other for precinct committee officer for the Ritzville Rural SE position.
And in Othello, Jim Carlton and Terry Thompson are running for the Precinct No. 1 committee officer post.
Under the format it is possible two candidates from the same party could both be on the ballot in November.
Running unopposed in their first elections are three county officials who were appointed to office in 2021 by the Adams County Commission.
Assessor Veronica Rodriguez, County Clerk Katie Sloan and candidate for District Court Judge Position 1 Andrea Russell are all running to be retained by Adams County voters.
Running unopposed for countywide re-election are Auditor Heidi K. Hunt, Prosecuting Attorney Randy J. Flyckt, Treasurer Kayla M. Meise and District Court Position No. 2 Judge Carolyn Benzel.
A frequent local candidate for various elected offices, Glen R. Stockwell, has changed voter registration from Ritzville to Spokane and entered the race for Spokane County Commissioner District No. 2. Stockwell is in a four-way primary election against Republicans Bob Apple and Michael Cathcart, and Democrat Amber Waldref.
