Vanderhold passed over superintendent

CHENEY – The Lind-Ritzville School District doesn't have to look for a new superintendent, at least not yet.

On April 22, the Cheney School Board decided to offer its top educator job to Valley School District Superintendent Ben Ferney.

In doing so, the board bypassed Donald Vanderholm of Ritzville, the current superintendent of Lind-Ritzville schools.

Vanderholm was one of four finalists for the job; he was the featured prospect at a meet-the-finalist program April 20.

The remaining two finalists were John Goldhardt of Manchester, N.H., School District, and Sean Dotson of the Tumwater School District.

Ferney will take over the Cheney post July 1. He is a graduate of Eastern Washington, Washington State and Gonzaga universities.

Ferney previously served as principal at Freeman Middle School in Freeman and as an assistant principal at Cheney Middle School, among other educational jobs.
