Arbor Day celebration planned

RITZVILLE – Arbor Day will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. April 29, at City Hall.

Cub Scout Pack No. 73, led by Jeff Kissler, will open the ceremony with the presentation of the colors.

Mayor Linda Kadlec will make an Arbor Day proclamation and accept the Tree City USA plaque on behalf of the city.

Local students have participated in an essay contest. Contest winners will be announced, and winning essays will be read, at the Arbor Day event.

The celebration concludes with tree planting, by local fifth graders, along the walking path on East Main Street. The kids will each be given a seedling to take home to plant with their families, courtesy of Garth Davis, of the Spokane Conservation District.

Patrol car damaged by passing truck

HATTON – A Washington State Patrol car was struck Friday, April 22, near the intersection of Highway 395 and State Route 26.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. , according to the Washington State Patrol.

Trooper Hanson was parked at a collision scene when a semi came around the corner and clipped the back of his patrol car, the patrol reported.

There were no injuries reported in either collision.

Schrag Rest Area to close

RITZVILLE – The Schrag rest areas on Interstate 90, 20 miles west of the city, will be closed for maintenance this week.

Scheduled maintenance will close the rest area in both directions of I-90 starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, through 5 p.m. Thursday, April 28.

Travelers using Interstate 90 will need to use alternate rest areas during the maintenance period.

Two named to honor roll

SPOKANE – Two Ritzville girls have been named to the honor roll at Spokane Community College.

Claire Kessler and Aaliyah Yaeger were among the 1,986 students named to the honor roll for the 2022 winter quarter, which ended in March.

The honor roll lists those students who achieved a grade-point average of 3.0 or above.
