Frigid weather hits area

RITZVILLE – Adams County remained under two weather advisories at press time Tuesday as frigid weather set in.

On Monday, Feb. 21, the National Weather Service issued both a Hazardous Weather Outlook and a Wind Chill Advisory for the county and much of Eastern Washington.

According to meteorologists, wind chills were expected to feel as cold as 20 below zero during the early part of the week.

The Wind Chill Advisory kicked in at 9 p.m. Monday and was expected to continue through at least 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"Very cold wind chills expected," The advisory said. "Wind chills zero to 20 below zero."

For Ritzville, meteorologists said residents should expect wind chills of minus-7 degrees Wednesday.

That means those outdoors could be affected by frostbite and hypothermia, in precautions are not taken, meteorologists said, noting those venturing out should wear winter-weather clothing, including hats and gloves.

"The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes," meteorologists said.

Alongside the frigid temperatures, weather officials said the arctic front passing through the region early this week may also bring snow.

On Monday, several inches of snow were reported in the Cheney and other areas to the north.

"Snow showers are expected along the arctic front with brief moderate snow showers possible," the Hazardous Weather Outlook said.

Daytime temperatures are expected to rise to about 30 on Thursday, 35 on Friday and into the low-40s on Saturday and Sunday.

Overnight lows are expected to be in the teens Thursday and Friday night, rising to the mid-20s by the weekend.
