Apple box labels on display

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Museum and Art Center will highlight the history of apple box labels during a presentation Wednesday, Sept. 1.

Kelsey Doncaster will present the history of apple box labels and their impact on Columbia Basin agricultural advertising from the mid-1900s until 1960.

The 1 p.m. program takes place at the museum, 401 S. Balsam St.

During that time, apples were packed in wooden crates with artistic labels on the ends.

Growers used catchy slogans and colorful artwork to advertise their own products as well as brand Washington apples in the emerging world market.

The Columbia Basin was seen as a “promised land” for agriculture at that time and caught up in the apple boom.

Places such as Quincy, Crescent Bar, White Bluffs, Neppel, Stratford, Coulee and Grant Orchards were home to large fruit orchards.

These orchards were planted and privately irrigated to capture the burgeoning market long before Reclamation’s massive Columbia Basin Project.
