Cross Country competes in Kettle Falls

Caleb Heater moves on to league qualifier

KETTLE FALLS – The Broncos high school and middle school runners competed in a league qualifier in Kettle Falls Saturday, Mar. 27, with freshman Caleb Heater moving on to the league championship in Asotin Saturday, April 3.

"Yesterday was a perfect day for racing. The weather was beautiful, the course was nice and flat, and the kids were excited to be there," Head Coach Morgan Hunt said.

"Caleb Heater ran an extremely great race. He is our only high school boy going to the meet next Saturday."

Heater finished the 5,000-meter race in 23:44.30, coming in 50th among 59 racers. Classmate Levi Hoeft came in 54th, at 25:01.23.

Taking first place for varsity boys was senior Easton Pomrankey of Kettle Falls, finishing in 16:34.93. Kettle Falls took first as a team with a score of 55, followed by Chewelah (56), Asotin (58), and Davenport with 61. Northwest Christian (Colbert) finished fifth with 98.

Hunt said all the middle school athletes had great races.

"It is always so fun to see middle school kids out and learning all about running," Hunt said. "Overall as a team, we had a great day of cross country racing."

For the boys' 1.5 mile race, seventh-grader Matthew Brown came in 15th place among 17 runners, at 12:30.02.

Taking first was Hrair Garabedian, an eighth-grader from St. George's who finished in 9.22.74. Reardan took first as a team with a score of 26, followed by St. George's with 30.

For the middle school girls' 1.5 mile race, Bronco Maeve Korthuis, a seventh-grader, came in 12th place 22 runners, at 12:46.53. Josie McLaughlin, a St. George's eighth-grader, took first at 9:52.33. St. George's took first as a team with a score of 15, followed by Northwest Christian (Colbert) at 50.
