Cross country meet at St. George

RITZVILLE – The Broncos were ready to join area schools at St. George in Spokane Saturday, Feb. 20, but the event was cancelled Friday, due to snow.

They are next scheduled to travel to Asotin, Saturday, Feb. 27. Their first league meet is scheduled for March 6 at Mt. Spokane High School.

Coach Morgan Hunt is in her third year of coaching the Broncos, and said she has four returning runners from her varsity team this year. Samuel Michaels, the only senior on the team, along with Eli Michaels, Levi Hoeft and Caleb Heater are back and ready to run.

"We had a good year last year," Hunt said. "There was a lot of growth from the beginning to the end of the season, which is always awesome to see."

Linnea Schafer was the sole runner to make it to state.

A middle school team was added this year, and turning out for the sport are 7th graders Erik Klewin, Matthew Brown and Maeve Korthuis.

Asked which school district might provide the toughest competition this year, Hunt said that was hard to say.

"Since it is such a different year, I really don't know who will be out to run," Hunt said.

Hunt coaches the team without an assistant coach. She said she did not know when spectators would be allowed at meets.

The Northeast 2B league made the decision to only allow home spectators at contests for at least the beginning of the season. Parents have priority, and spectators need to be on a pass list ahead of game time. With capacity restrictions, there's no guarantee everyone wanting to attend any event will be allowed.

"It's so exciting to finally see all the teams back in action. It's been a long time coming," said Hunt.
