Age doesn't matter

After writing last week’s column it occurred to me that I have been submitting this weekly blurb, well I’ve missed a few as well, since the fall of 2004 when Jake Kragt and his teammates made that great championship run. When you write a column you get a few ideas bundled in your head and once you start writing them down you start to see how many words that have piled up and before you know it you’ve got to bring it to an end.

That certainly was what happened last week and the more I thought about it the more I realized that I left out two mentors of this team that really should have been mentioned. When the LR Broncos won the 2004 WIAA 2B football championship it also was Coach Mike Lynch’s final game as the Bronco Head Coach. He is still helping out as an assistant to the man who replaced him, Coach Greg Whitmore.

But these two guys had a big hand in the life of Jake Kragt and the athletes on that championship team as well as many other Bronco athletes. I felt it was important to mention these gentlemen because of their positive influence and early success of Jake and his teammates as well as today’s athletes.

Super Bowl

I know that most of you don’t remember what I wrote about a year ago at this time but I do. It was about the Super Bowl I didn’t get to watch since KAYU and Dish weren’t on negotiating terms and the game failed to be a part of my life that day which was the first Super Bowl I didn’t watch.

I did get to see this year’s game. I didn’t see the point in watching 8 hours or however many there were of pregame stuff. I know how the season went and I didn’t need to rehash C-19 postponements and watching highlights that I may have already seen but may not have interested me.

I did listen to some pregame talk on the radio which was interesting since a lot of it is trivia, which I kind of like. What I find interesting is the predictions of who these guys think is going to win and why. Most of the predictions were for a close game to most likely be determined with a late field goal or TD pass. Predictions are easy to make because we don’t revisit them and say, “Wow, you were way off!” Or “Nice guess on the final score, you just had the winning team wrong.”

I honestly didn’t know how the game would play out. A lot of folks felt that Kansas City Chiefs’ QB was a magician and would be tough to control, and during an early drive when he scrambled for a couple of first downs they were right but when the Chiefs had to settle for field goals it certainly was an omen.

Tom Brady fans on the other hand thought that his secret formula of winning Super Bowls would continue. This was a unique year not just because of C-19 but because Tom Brady left New England and became a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. I really don’t care who you are, you have to admire Brady. He credits his coaches and teammates for the successes. For all of the Super Bowl championships that he has, seven, he hasn’t gone out to play for the highest bidder which would decimate team’s rosters. He went to a place that wanted him and several players saw this and signed on.

All of the interviews that I heard from the Tampa Bay players there showed nothing but respect for Brady and how hard he works and his attention to detail. These guys said that he led by example and his leadership was impressive. They knew that they could win a championship if they followed the game plan and put in the effort on every play that they were on the field.

The Buc defense really made life difficult for Patrick Mahomes and the KC Chiefs offense. They pressured Mahomes into making passes earlier than he wanted and sacked him several times.

I know that defensive coordinators are going to watch this game film and design the same type of tactic against the Chiefs next season.

A couple more things of note: The 43- year-old Brady defeated the State Farm duo in back-to-back games as in Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes, which to me is funny.

You may have heard that Buc Coach Bruce Arians was the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl. I am four months older than Coach Arians. Age is what you think it is. To me Tom Brady is just a kid, or better yet a GOAT.
