Sprague events under smoky skies

SPRAGUE – The annual Sprague Days events were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but community members and visitors carried on with a contest hosted by Spokane Disk Dogs in town, and a bike and car show at Four Seasons Resort.

At the park next to the Viking Restaurant, a frisbee contest field was set up and scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. The show was over by 11:30 a.m.

"We only had six entries altogether," said Rodney Jamerson of Spokane Disc Dogs. "It was the lowest turnout of any event we've ever had."

Still, everyone went home with a prize. For results, see results and photos in next week's Journal.

Meanwhile, things were just getting started over at Four Seasons Resort on Sprague Lake. D.J. Steve Baker was setting up to spin tunes lakeside, while kids enjoyed playing in jumpy houses, visitors looked over jewelry and clothing at vendors' booths, and bike and car enthusiasts gathered near almost a dozen displayed vehicles.

Baker, of Spokane, said he would be playing music until dark, and then karaoke would begin.

"We usually have quite the turnout for karaoke," Baker said. "We came out for the Fourth of July weekend and had a blast, so we've been out several times since then."

"It's not as good a turnout as we hoped for, with all the smoke," resort owner Dave Davisson said.

Chris Green of Renegade Restorations, one of the sponsors of the car and bike show, said he originally planned for it to take place next to his shop in town.

"I called the county health department, and they shut it down," Green said. "They said I can't promote an event that would attract more than 10 people in a given day. I knew I wouldn't make enough off the car show to afford a fine."

"It's a new world, trying to figure out what we can and can't do," said Sgt. Timothy Bowes of the Army National Guard, who was in attendance without any vehicles. "We were going to show up with trucks, but between COVID and fires, it's pretty hard to get a unit. Last year we brought out a wrecker for the parade, and would like to bring one out next year."

The Sprague Chamber of Commerce held their annual raffle, which brought in $2,054.

"It was a great success," said Chamber President Joy Wilken. "Our goal was $1500, because we made $1200 last year."

Wilken said area businesses - including small, home-based businesses, donated generously enough that 59 prizes were given out. For raffle results, visit http://www.ritzvillejournal.com.
