RITZVILLE — Adams County Treasurer Kayla Meise said an increase of 64% in state revenue sales and use tax was seen in May of 2020 over May of 2019.
Sales and use tax are moneys collected by the Department of Revenue from retailers for sales and use taxes.
Meise presented the findings to county commissioners at their June 15 meeting.
The increase, according to Meise, is due to new construction; with the money received in May collected by the Department of Revenue in March. Meise said she anticipates a potential impact of a 20-30% future decrease in collections in sales and use tax. She said Adams County will not see the actual impact of COVID-19 collections until August.
In May 2019, $136, 719 was collected, she said. In May, 2020, that number was $212,100.
May 2018 had $113,251 sales and use tax collected, she said.
The projected (pro-rated) amount of sales and use tax to be collected by May 2020 was $642,405, and the actual amount was $789,622.
Adams County Public Works Director Todd O’Brien told commissioners June 8 that reported fuel taxes collected, compared to last year, were down approximately 40% in March. He said he expects April collections to be even lower, in all likelihood.
