Krieger pleads for liberal aid to education

One of the largest and most enthusiastic meetings in the interest of education was held Saturday, April 10, at the courthouse. The speaker of the afternoon was Prof. F.O. Kreager of Pullman. "Farmers of today and tomorrow must study agriculture in order to make the land produce the returns that they and the country need. This country will be in danger if our agricultural life is threatened. Heretofore we have been a food exporting nation, but unless we intensify our agriculture, we may have to import foodstuffs."

The Editor Speaks His Piece by Bill Wilmot

A week almost to the hour has passed since one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known died at the peak of his career. We must not expect of our new president, Harry Truman, what we expected of Mr. (Franklin) Roosevelt, but we must give him our full measure of support. He will do all that is humanly possible for any man to do in similar circumstances, and the least we can do is to give him all possible aid.

Ailing Farmer Receives Help from Friends

Washtucna - Five tractors, two sweeps, two disc plows and one double disc covered approximately 600 acres of ground in three days to finish up the spring plowing and discing for Vernon Gillis when he became ill with pneumonia on Monday. Those helping out were Cecil Gillis, Larry Hoffman, Ray DeRue, Buck Johnson and Ernie Stoess.

High Speed Chase

A Franklin County deputy, a member of the Connell Police Department, two Ritzville detachment Washington State Troopers, and Spokane area state troopers were involved in a high speed chase that ended in the middle of a wheat field. Trooper Falkner apprehended the driver (of a stolen vehicle) after a short foot pursuit and a Spokane trooper apprehended the passenger.
