Worst Seat in the House

With no sports to watch, I’m seeing myself anew

There comes a point when you run out of ideas for a sports column because there are no sports to talk about.

So, I’m going to just talk about a few things I’ve noticed or witnessed or heard about. Let’s face it folks we are running out of patience.

One of the first things I really noticed this week is that there is a change in my look. The first time it occurred to me I thought, “Jeez, there is something about me that looks a bit younger than usual.”

After spending a moment really focusing, I thought, “Oh yeah, my hair is about as long as it was when I was going to college.” We really need to get the folks that make us look good back in their shops.

I’ll wear a mask; I’m sure they’ll wear a mask. And I’ll wait in my car until I’m called in to get my hair trimmed.

I think it is important that we all feel good about how we look and get the barbers and hair dressers back to work. My wife is going crazy with the length of her hair, too, so it’s just not me.

I think the only people that aren’t complaining about the hair situation are those that shave their heads and the people that bought the vacuum cleaner hair cutter as seen on TV.

Oh, and maybe the governor, since it looks like his hair is always maintained. How can that be? Does he have a barber with 6-foot arms?

Just wondering...

Back to sports

A couple of weeks ago, I watched a boxing match from 1978 between Muhammed Ali and Leon Spinks. This was a rematch, since Spinks won the first fight.

I watched from the fourth round until the end and it was a classic. It was amazing to see Ali fight at the age of 36 and be so light on his feet.

He won the fight in a unanimous decision over Spinks. This fight was a closed-circuit event, so a person would have had to go to a venue like the Spokane Coliseum to watch it live.

Now, a person can get pay per view and watch it from the comfort of home.

There are a few things that I will spend the time to watch as a rerun and this fight was one of them because I never did get to see it. Chances are it would have been shown a week or so later on ABC Wide World of Sports, but I wasn’t fortunate enough to see it then. So, this really was fun to see 40-plus years later.

I’ve talked with a few people and some have been watching Gonzaga reruns from this past season. There are some that have been watching baseball games from years ago. I see that there have been Stanley Cup, NBA and NCAA championship game reruns, in case you can’t remember what the outcomes were.

Or maybe you know someone that really isn’t into sports and you wager a bet with the guy. Sorry, I shouldn’t talk about rigged sports betting.

We need to get back into the swing of things before we all go a bit batty. Sorry if that offends you.

Anyway, I have an idea as to how to bring back the NBA, gradually. I think we can have fans but they need to be at least 6 feet apart and once they enter an arena they can’t leave until they are escorted out.

This can be a problem when it comes to bathroom breaks, but we are living in trying times.

The game itself will be based on NBA All-Star games, since no one plays defense anyway and everyone is hoisting up 3s and the defenders all seem to be 6 feet apart anyway.

All of the teams will be part of an all-star team to get their shooting eyes back and get back into some sort of shape once they are cleared to play real basketball.

Just a thought...

Baseball can come back, but there can be no infield shifts. That way, the players will be a lot farther apart for safety sakes.

The umpires will need to stay away from the catcher by at least 6 feet and the digital balls and strikes will be used. The call will be relayed to the umpire and he will make the call. There will be no mound visits.

Coaches and managers will use the same technology that football uses to relay plays to the QBs in the NFL.

It’s not perfect, but let’s play ball.
