LRS wrestling squad hits the mat for pair of holiday tournaments

North Okanogan Holiday Invitational

Two Lind-Ritzville/Sprague grapplers brought home gold medals Dec. 21 from the annual North Okanogan Holiday Invitational wrestling tournament.

LRS champions include Johnny Ryan, 1st at 113; and Doug Morris, 1st at 195.

Royal won the tournament with 152 points, followed by Oroville with 122, Kittitas with 93.5, Davenport with 71 and Tonasket with 70. Okanogan was fifth with 67, Almira/Coulee-Hartline sixth with 48, Omak seventh with 44 and Ritzville eighth with 43.

Other teams in the tournament included Republic-Curlew, Pateros, Eastmont, Brewster, Kettle Falls, Inchelium and Wilbur-Creston.

Pomeroy Christmas Tournament

LRS’s Doug Morris brought home the bronze medal Dec. 27 from the Pomeroy Christmas Tournament.

At 195 pounds, Morris earned 16 of the team’s 23 points in the annual wrestling tournament.

Morris opened with a two byes and advanced to the quarterfinals, where he defeated Joey Calene of Clarkston, 8-4.

In the semifinals, he was pinned by Thor Kessinger of Orofino, Idaho, in 3:11, sending him to the consolation round.

In consolations, Morris pinned Billy Duffield of Hanford in 2:12 to reach the bout for third-place.

In the medal matched, he pinned Daniel Nicklaus of Clarkston in 3:25 to win the bronze.

The only other LRS grappler to win any team points was Jay Harder at 220 pounds.

Harder received byes into the semifinals, where he would run into eventual champion Jonah Staigle of Joseph, Ore. Staigle pinned Harder in 36 seconds.

Harder would redeem himself in his consolation round match, pinning Jack Waters of Kittitas in 39 seconds to advance to the medal match for third-place.

There, Damon Nipper of Union, Ore., would pin him in 1:41 for the medal, leaving Harder to finish fourth.

Other LRS wrestlers in the tournament included Brandon Davis at 106, Spencer Olson at 170 and Thomas Rosen at 285.

Rosen received two byes to open the tournament then was pinned by Carson Ash of Clarkston in 3:11, then by Bobby Mauseth of Hanford in 19 seconds.

In his opening match, Olson was pinned by Nevin Goldsmith of Enterprise, Ore., in 1:59. Then after receiving back-to-back consolation byes, he was pinned by Braeden Rogers of Colfax.

Davis was shocked in his tournament-opener when he was pinned by Landon Olsen of Clearwater Valley, Idaho, in 50 seconds. He received a second round bye, then lost a major decision, 14-4, to Jacob Sisk of Colfax.

Overall, LRS finished 13th as a team.
