LRHS' Whitmore to hold weight loss presentation

LRHS health teacher, athletic director and head football coach Greg Whitmore will be holding a presentation next Wednesday that promises to help attendees discover the secret to losing weight.

Whitmore is holding the event as the founder of Tyee Mountain Wellness, a website where Whitmore shares his passion for teaching health via blog posts and YouTube videos. On the website, Whitmore covers topics such as vaping, e-cigarette and tobacco use in youth, his own personal health experiences and his experiences as a health educator.

The website is named after Tyee Mountain in the upper Entiat Valley in central Washington. Growing up, Whitmore writes that some of his fondest moments were when he was hiking, mountain biking, picnicking and camping on or around the mountain. It was also during these times that he felt the most relaxed and stress-free.

Now, Whitmore is using his almost three decades as a health teacher in Ritzville to go beyond the classroom with his presentation on weight loss. The event is set for Dec. 11, next Wednesday, at 7 p.m. in the LRHS Collaboration Room. For Whitmore, it’s a chance to spread his teaching beyond just high school students in his classes.

“Health is a pretty interesting topic, even to ninth graders, but there’s some certain topics--such as weight loss, nutrition, proper eating and slowing down the aging process--they’re not too worried about, like anti-aging or sleeping better all of the time. I wanted to take my passion of teaching health to adults as well, and this is a good way to do it … this is a chance to kind of do some things locally after 28 years of teaching health.”

The presentation will be educational, Whitmore says, and he will also be sharing the nutritional plan that he’s been using for about a year, which incorporates intermittent fasting. He’s also interested in working one-on-one with people in the future to help them with developing things such as a fitness plan or eating patterns.

Whitmore’s goal is to help teach attendees how they can live longer and healthier. For Whitmore, he says he lost 34 pounds in three months with the nutritional plan he’ll be sharing, without even trying. The plan has also given him more energy, reduced his stress, helped him sleep better and has slowed down his aging.

“I just want to try to help people get healthier,” Whitmore said.
