RGS students compete at Bi-County Academic Contest

The Bi-County Academic Contest was held on Nov. 13 this year, with students from 3rd through 8th grade participating in the annual event.

This year's contest was hosted by the Harrington School District, with Ritzville, Lind, Reardan, Wilbur, Liberty, Harrington, Odessa, Creston, Davenport, Lamont and Sprague-Lamont all participating. Schools in Adams and Lincoln County participate in the yearly contest.

Students compete in six different categories during the contest: math, spelling, geography, argumentative speech, impromptu speech and interpretive speech. For each school, teachers selected students from the 3rd through 6th grade to compete in the spelling and math categories. One student in the 5th through 8th grade competes in the math, geography and speeches categories.

Eleven Ritzville Grade School students participated in the event. In the 3rd grade spelling contest, Jayda Lobe finished in first place and Sadie Towne finished in fifth place. Ryan Erdman and Shane Kubik both participated in the 4th grade spelling contest. Allesandra Mendez finished in third place in the 5th grade spelling contest, with Rose Fedie also participating.

In the math portion of the event, 4th grader Karsten Stokoe finished in fourth place in his grade, while CJ Vallone finished in third place in the 5th grade contest.

RGS 5th graders also competed in the geography category and two of the speech categories. Cameron Boness finished in fourth place in the geography contest, Clair McKinney-Cartwright finished in third place in the interpretive speech contest and Connor McAnally was the winner of the impromptu speech contest.
