Schafer named to all-league cross country team

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague’s Linnea Schafer was named All-League as 2B teams from around the area competed at the 2019 District 7 cross country championships on Oct. 26 in Harrington.
In the girls varsity race dominated by Kettle Falls--who had three of the top-four finishes--Schafer finished No. 6 in 21:39.2. Also for LRS, Julia Klein finished in 23:59.52 for No. 28, Mercedes Miller was No. 49 in 27:13.19, Cameron Woods was No.51 in 27:39.6 and Jordyn Fode was No. 61 in 39:24.01.
Sixty-three runners finished the race. Mya Edwards of Kettle Falls won the race in 20:04.78. Lilly Denham of Asotin was No. 2 finishing in 20:39.8, while Zarahemla Johnson of Kettle Falls rounded out the top-three with a time of 20:45.9.
LRS head coach Morgan Hunt said finishing all-league was a goal for Schafer. She also said she was pleased how the race finished for her whole team.
“The course in Harrington is always a tough course to run on, but my kids took it as a challenge and did wonderful,” Hunt said. “The amount of determination and mental focus was outstanding this week in Harrington. I saw some great racing strategies, positive attitudes, and overall great performances from all of my runners.”
On the boys side, Hunt was particularly pleased with the performance of Caleb Heater.
“Caleb had a big [personal record] this week and with the course being as tough as it was, it was great to see,” Hunt said. “He is truly focused and determined to continue to [get personal records] throughout the season.”
Heater finished in 85th place with a time of 21:57.93. Eli Michels led the way for LRS finishing 54th in 19:51.66.
Easton Pomrankey of Kettle Falls won the race in 16:51.42. Ben Graham of Northwest Christian finished second in 17:08.82 and Ryan Denham of Asotin was third in 17:10.29.
