The Best Seats in the House

It was another great weekend at the Wheat Land Communities’ Fair. I hope you spent a little time there.

This is one of these few things we have that brings our communities together and it certainly is fun visiting with folks we may not have seen since last year at this time.

It was busy at our house I can attest to that.

On Thursday night my niece had a layover at our house with her two young’uns. They were on their way from Lacy to Helena where her folks live for the long holiday weekend.

It has been awhile since I saw Keri last and we had a nice visit before getting back on the road Friday morning.

My wife was super busy helping out with the Eagles, quilt booth, Ralston Grange and the pie booth.

I helped with the Lions Club chicken on Thursday and was scheduled to work the Chamber ice cream booth on Sunday but they sold out Saturday night.

I did help run the chain gang at the high school game Friday night, which was a lot of fun even though we really do work at it.

It was a big win for the Broncos over Davenport and the home town boys looked pretty good offensively and at times were tough on defense in the 48-24 victory.

On Saturday morning my wife and I were honored to be this year’s Grand Marshals for the local parade. I can honestly say that this was not on our bucket list, but we will certainly cross this off the list now.

A big thank you goes out to the Ritzville Chamber of Commerce and those people who felt that the Anderson’s were worthy of this great honor. We had a lot of fun and it was certainly special to be riding in Gayle and Gaynel Gering’s 1956 Thunderbird.

A very big thank you goes out to them for being so gracious to be a big part of our day.

As usual my wife and I went our separate ways as she went to the fair to help out at the quilt booth again. I’m not sure how many shifts she did plus helping out with set up and take down. She is definitely a worker bee.

I, on the other hand, went to Cheney to see the EWU Eagles home opener against the CWU Wildcats. Central won the toss and I think that was the only thing they won all day.

They elected to defer and kicked off to EWU. It was a short kickoff and the Eags brought it back to the 45. Central was flagged for being offside on the kickoff and EWU started five yards closer to pay dirt.

On the first play from scrimmage QB Gage Gubrud hit a speedy Nsimba (pronounced Simba) Webster for a 50 yard TD and with a total of 13 seconds off the clock the Eagles were on their way to a big win.

Webster finished with 10 receptions for 212 yards and two touchdowns.

Former Eagle QB Reilly Hennessey led the Wildcats on two second quarter TDs, but trailed EWU at the half 34-13.

Many of his former teammates made his life a bit difficult during the game especially in the second half when the defense shut out Central.

CWU is a very good team and will do well this year. It is difficult to step up a division and challenge a Division I opponent as a Division II team. In the long run this game will help both teams set the tone for the season.

It was great to see so many of my EWU friends that sit close by including RHS alum Dusty Van Vleet and a couple of good friends from the other side of the state in Tug and Kenny G.

There will be a bunch more of my Eagles friends that will be there on Sept. 22 when the Eagles host Cal Poly in the conference opener for both teams.

By Sunday night we were a bit tired which was to be expected. I do know that Meme and I had the best seats in the house on Saturday morning riding in style with Gayle Gering at the helm. What a great weekend!
