Ritzville Fire Chief provides firework safety tips

Ritzville Fire Department Chief Joel Bell is reminding area residents to be cautious this Fourth of July holiday with the use of fireworks.

Residents are asked to abide by all local laws regarding the use of fireworks. All firework labels should be read prior to igniting the fireworks, Bell said.

A responsible adult should supervise all firework activities at all times, and fireworks should never be given to children. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix, Bell said, and alcohol should not be consumed while lighting off fireworks.

Bell reminds residents to light one firework at a time and quickly move away. Those lighting off fireworks should always wear safety glasses, he added.

Fireworks should always be used outdoors in a clear area, and away from dry vegetation, buildings and vehicles, Bell said. Any firework that does not ignite properly should be left for 20 minutes before being soaked in a bucket of water. A water hose and bucket of water should always be nearby while lighting fireworks.

Fireworks should not be carried in the pocket of clothing or shot from a metal or glass container, Bell said. Residents should also not experiment with homemade fireworks.

To properly dispose of fireworks, Bell said to wet them down and place them in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.
