Fabric, craft store opens in downtown Ritzville

People who are seeking items like new quilt patterns and fabric, and scrapbooking materials can visit to Ritzville Yellow House Fabrics and Crafts on East 201 Main Avenue.

Ritzville Yellow House Fabrics and Crafts opened its doors during a soft opening on June 21.

Owner Karen Cady said the business will be a place where people can purchase materials for sewing, embroidery, knitting and crochet. Customers will also be able to buy items for scrapbooking, beading and other craft projects.

Cady said she opened Yellow House because she loves to make crafts and clothes, which she learned from her mother.

As a child, Cady used to fashion clothes for her dolls, and later made outfits for herself.

She explained opening the business allows her to share her knowledge and passion for crafting with other people.

Cady graduated from Apollo College and is a fully-licensed massage practitioner. In September 2015, Cady opened the Ritzville Magpie Nest with Debbie Chapman.

Within the building, Cady still operates Lavender Sage and Massage.

The massage parlor is open on the days Yellow House is closed. She added customers can schedule massage appointments while they are shopping at Yellow House.

Cady explained she is starting with a small inventory and will add more items from storage in the coming months.

Customers can purchase bolts of fabric located next to the counter or on one of the bookshelves. They can also buy spools of thread, sewing books and other items.

She said Yellow House Fabrics and Crafts will host classes for people to attend.

Cady is looking to host glassblowing and lace weaving demonstrations at Yellow House in the fall.

The business will also have equipment customers can use for projects such as a fabric cutter and rubber stamps.

She said the business will feature different specials throughout the year.

Ritzville Yellow House Fabrics and Crafts is one of the businesses participating in the 2018 Row by Row Experience.

According to the Row by Row Experience website, quilters travel to participating businesses across the United States, Canada or Europe to find free patterns to use in making a quilt based the theme, “Sew Musical.”

Cady explained quilters will receive a free 18 by 18-inch pattern when they visit the local business. Yellow House’s featured pattern for the Row by Row Experience is “Submarine.”

She said the first quilter who completes a finished quilt from eight patterns will receive 25 fat quarter bolts. Customers who bring in a finished quilt will receive a prize.

Cady added the Yellow House has a room where crafting groups can meet, like the Fiber Guild.

She also plans on hosting Fiber Fest at Yellow House in April 2019.

Cady said she is planning a kickoff event in July or August, after she receives Christmas merchandise.

Ritzville Yellow House Fabrics and Crafts will be open Thursday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
