AAUW presents four young women with scholarships

The Ritzville branch of American Association of Business Women (AAUW) presented four area scholars with scholarships during a banquet at the Emanuel Lutheran Church on April 11.

The scholarships were presented in the areas of math, science and technology, with the purpose of encouraging women to pursue degrees in those fields.

Lorria McCauley is the daughter of Crystal McCauley, and she attends Lind-Ritzville High School. She was recognized for her achievements in math at the banquet.

McCauley’s honors and achievements include placing first on a team at the Washington State Regional Math Competition (WSMC), placing third place on a WSMC regional topical team, and placing second on the WSMC state team.

After high school, McCauley would like to attend an out-of-state college to further her education.

Madison Miller is the daughter of Christie Saucier and attends Sprague High School. Miller received recognition and a scholarship in math.

Miller’s interests include softball, FFA, music, playing guitar, piano and alto, helping people, working with children, raising livestock, traveling and cheerleading. Her honors and accomplishments include three years on Honor Roll, two years of Honor Band, earning the Most Improved award in softball, Student of the Month recognition, placing sixth in FFA State Sales, and finishing in third place in the sales competition at the District FFA contest.

After high school, Miller plans to study foreign languages and join the Peace Corps for a summer. She is currently undecided in what college she will attend, but she is considering Gonzaga.

Rose Melville is the daughter of Liz Melville and also attends Sprague High School. She received recognition and a scholarship for her achievements in science.

Melville’s interests and hobbies include tennis, running, reading and anything Harry Potter related. Her honors and achievements include two years of receiving the English History Award, three years of National Honor Roll, four years of Honor Roll, and the U.S. Presidential Scholars Nominee for the State of Washington.

After high school, Melville plans to attend Humboldt State University and study marine biology.

While there, she hopes to run for their cross country team. After college, she would like to live somewhere on the coast and be a marine biologist.

Sharon Anderson is the daughter of Gerry and Jennifer Anderson. She attends Lind-Ritzville High School and was recognized for her achievements in science.

Anderson’s interests include music and volleyball. Anderson plays music in the school band, as well as with her family band, Axe of Mercy, for worship music at their church.

Her honors and accomplishments include Wheat Land Communities’ Fair royalty, National Honor Society, ASB Reporter and ASB president in middle school, Star Chapter Award in FFA, fitting and showing swine champion, and six years of participating in Bi-County Honor Band.

After high school, Anderson plans to attend college and study biology. She is currently debating between pursuing a career in biophysics or molecular biology.
