LRS takes on Kettle Falls in tennis

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos hosted their first league match of the season against Kettle Falls on Tuesday, March 20. The team was scheduled to play at St. George’s a few days later, but the match was canceled due to weather conditions.

In the Kettle Falls match, only members of the Broncos girl’s team had the opportunity to compete, as Kettle Falls does not currently have a boy’s team.

The Broncos defeated the Bulldogs 3-2 in the league match. This was the first full-set matches for the LRS team this season.

Claire Kessler competed as the No. 1 singles player for the Broncos. She defeated her opponent, Jessica Lawrence, 6-0, 6-3.

In the No. 2 singles position, Katheran Gingrich took on Madeline Neyens. Gingrich earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over her Kettle Falls competitor.

Rounding out the singles competition, Megan Buriak played in the No. 3 singles position for the Broncos. She was able to defeat Sophie Keller 6-2, 6-0 in their match.

In the doubles contest, Viktoria Mengel-Niemann and Serena Block competed for the Broncos as the No. 1 doubles team.

Kettle Falls’ Autumn Williams and Almira McDonald defeated the Broncos duo in a close match: 2-6, 7-6, 7-6.

In the No. 2 doubles contest, Tilla Mathiesen and Kayla Eddington took on the Bulldogs duo of Amelia Pancoast and Deja Lewis.

The Broncos team had another close match, but faced a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 defeat.

The Broncos’ season continued with a match against Harrington on March 27. The team is currently working on improving fundamentals and gaining experience on the court.
