Safety in a small town

It seems like the norm these days when watching the news is that we find events are both shocking and disgusting.

We keep asking ourselves “how did things get this way?” or “In my day these things never would have happened”.

We might remind ourselves that this is a big reason we choose to live in a small town. You are right of course.

Ritzville is a rare example of a small town with plentiful law enforcement and other services. We have City Police, County Sheriffs Department and Washington State Patrol all stationed here.

Although each agency may have different jurisdictions, I’m often reminded of how critical the partnerships between these agencies are. They assist each other without reservation or hesitation.

This extends as well to the emergency response folks with ambulances, hospital and ER staff, medical helicopter service, and City/County fire departments.

You can guess why we don’t have crime issues that most cities deal with. Our local law enforcement agencies expend a lot of time and energy helping kids and anyone else that may be in need.

Many times public servant means public relations. We should all be very thankful our community still operates on a ‘personal’ level. These professionals are approachable and genuinely interested in your concerns.

In many cases they will knock on your door to discuss an issue before problems develop. We can also be thankful when the ambulance or fire trucks arrive in record time.

So the next time you’re speeding down Division Street or First Avenue and see a cop sitting in the car watching you, of course slow down, but also consider giving that officer a friendly wave and a smile.

They are all committed to your safety and well being. A small token showing they’re appreciated might just make their day.
