Poor choice in Fourth of July illustration

After perusing the post July 4 edition of the Journal, I am still scratching my head as to the point of the editorial cartoon. (A stunned George Washington looking out over a sky full of problem centered fireworks).

Being as I actively serve my former employer concerning government affairs issues, I am very aware of the many troublesome problems facing our state government.

Yet as frustrated as your flagged George Washington may be with current events, linking the listed political concerns with a “Happy 4th of July” moniker strikes me as inappropriate for a holiday celebrating the founding of our nation, which certainly has many more positive traits than negative problems.

Seems to me taking a day to set aside continuing political concerns facing our state is entirely appropriate and would be a rare breath of fresh media air. I looked for, and could not find, a cartoonist signature, which is unusual. (I hope that doesn’t imply the cartoon was put together at a staff

meeting)!

Certainly the Journal could do better. If not, I would suggest next year a simple illustration of our U.S. flag with a backdrop of celebratory fireworks would convey a far more positive impact to acknowledge one of our most cherished national holidays.
