The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague baseball team finished their season last week with two final doubleheaders on April 26 and April 30.

Head Coach Jason Aldrich and Assistant Coach Jason Hilzer were both very impressed with the team’s progress over the course of the season. With the amount of youth on the team their learning curve was steep but major improvements were made from each and every player on the field.

Their first doubleheader of last week was against the Liberty Lancers on Tuesday. They were unable to offensively compete with the Lancers and fell in both games 0-10.

In game one Easton Nelson pitched with Spencer Miller behind the plate. In the second inning Liberty was able to bring home six runners and the Broncos remained the entire game with no hits. They only had two errors in the field.

In the second game Brandon McClure started on the mound and pitched until the fourth inning where Camden Smith relieved him followed by Garrett Frederick in the same inning. Again Miller was behind the plate. In this game the Broncos had one hit and racked up eight errors.

Their next doubleheader was a make up game against Mary Walker in Springdale on Saturday, April 30.

Nelson began the first game on the mound. Coach Aldrich said Nelson was not at the top of his game but stated he was able to battle his way through five innings to keep the game close. He had five strikeouts, allowed four walks, eight hits and four earned runs.

McClure replaced Nelson in the sixth inning with no outs and two on. He ended his two innings on the mound with one strikeout, no walks, one hit and no earned runs.

Chandler Whidman had a two RBI single in the second inning to secure an early lead over Mary Walker. Bryce Kelly led the team with a two run single in the top of the seventh inning to earn the lead back for the Broncos.

Defensively Smith had a great game at shortstop with six assists and two put outs.

Frederick pitched the entire second game and did exceptionally well, according to Coach Aldrich. He threw 95 pitches over the six innings. He had three strikeouts, four base-on-balls, and allowed six hits and three earned runs.

Miller, who was catching, did a good job with help from Hilzer to call pitches in crucial situations to keep the Mary Walker hitters at bay.

The Broncos were only able to get four hits in the game. Both Nelson and McClure each had an RBI producing doubles in the fifth inning.

Though the team had just a handful of wins for the season the strides they were able to make are very promising for the future of the club. Four eighth graders are now seasoned varsity players.

Coach Aldrich has challenged the team to continue working to become better athletes and baseball players through the off-season. He has no doubt if the team can do this the future will be bright again very soon for LRS baseball.
